IN one of the most competitive conference meets in recent years, the second-ranked Stanford men's swimming team won an unprecedented 23rd consecutive Pac-10 Men's Swimming Championship today in Long Beach, Calif.

The Cardinal won with 866.5 points, followed by Cal (773), Arizona (522.5), USC (505), ASU (407) and Washington (299).

"This is one of the hardest fought Pac-10 Championships in years," said Stanford head coach Skip Kenney. "I am so proud of this team and how they came together to do something no other team in this conference has ever done."

As they've done throughout the meet, the CaRdinal won its share of events — though fewer than Cal — but it was Stanford depth that gave Coach Kenney's men the title.

1650 yard freestyle
In the first event of the evening, USC's Ous Mellouli claimed his third victory of the Championships, and he did it following the same script that brought him the other two. Swimming at the shoulder of Stanford's Shaun Phillips for 62 lenths, the Tunisian made his move with 100 yards to go, pulled away and won in 15:01.80. Phillips was right behind in a PR 15:02.32.

200 yard backstroke
The Cardinal claimed its first victory of the evening when senior Markus Rogan, an Austrian, won the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:40.97, just off Lenny Krayzelburg's meet and Pac-10 mark of 1:40.59 from 1997.

The win gave Stanford its sixth consecutive title in the event and the third for Rogan. Stanford swept the top three spots to ensure that the dynasty will continue as junior Peter Marshall finished second (1:41.71) and Hawaiian freshman Hongzhe Sun placed third (1:42.73, 1:42.44p). Cal's Alex Lim was fourth in 1:43.32.

100 yard freestyle
just as it had in the 50 free, Cal dominated the 100, with Duje Draganja winning in a nation-leading 41.96 and breaking the Pac-10 meet record of 42.21 set by teammate Anthony Ervin in 2001. The win gave the Croatian national champion his second title in the event (the first came in 2002).

ASU's Nick Brunelli, who won the 200 free yesterday, was second in 43.12, but Cal grabbed third (Rolandas Gimbutis, 43.26) and fifth. To top it off, Mike Cavic took the consols in 43.00 — the second-fastest time in the event in the meet.

Stanford took sixth, seventh and eighth with Bobby O'Bryan the Cardinal's top finisher at 43.98, followed by Andrew Schnell (44.06) and Ben Wildman-Tobriner (43.65).

200 yard breaststroke
When Washington's Phil Davis won the 100 yard breaststroke yesterday in a meet record 53.04, he took the Huskies' first Pac-10 crown in 13 years. It was a momentous achievement for the Washington senior and for Coach Mickey Wender's Washington program, which came within a hair of being cut two years ago.

But to the surprise of everyone, the unheralded senior pulled off an even more specetacular encore today. Taking no chances, Davis grabbed the lead at the start and never looked back, splitting 54.54 at the halfway mark and winning the 200 yard breaststroke in a meet and Pac-10 mark of 1:54.45, which also happens to be the nation's top time heading into the NCAAs. The win vaults the virtually unknown Davis into contention for an Olympic berth with the likes of Ed Moses and Texas' Brendan Hansen.

Davis, who broke Stanford's Michael Bruce's meet mark (1:55.70 in 2003) and Pac-10 mark (1:54.81 in 2002) becomes the first Husky in memory to win two Pac-10 crowns in one year and the first in decades to set a Pac-10 record.

Cal's Henrique Barbosa was also under the old meet record with his 1:55.18 while Cardinal Michael Bruce placed third in 1:56.57.

200 yard butterfly
After twice being caught from behind, Stanford's Jayme Cramer finally won an event. And he did it the way it was done to him: coming from behind. Fourth at the 50 and third at the 100, the sophomore took the lead on the third 50 and held off Arizona's Juan Veloz, who dogged him the entire way, for the victory.

Cramer clocked in at 1:43.87, just ahead of Veloz (1:44.37) with Cardinal teammate Matt McDonald third (1:44.72). The victory was the fourth in the last five years in the meet for the Cardinal.

400 yard freetyle relay
Cal closed out the meet in impressive fashion, throwing together a 4×100 yard free relay in which every man split 43-something. The all-foreign team of Gimbutis (Lithuania, 43.58), Jonas Tilly (Sweden, 43.02), Cavic (Yugoslavia by way of southern California, 43.12) and Draganja (Croatia, 43.03) swam a controlled 2:52.75. Arizona followed in 2:53.39 with Stanford third in 2:53.62.

Arizona's Lyndon Ferns was the swiftest leadoff swimmer (43.57) while Stanford's Bobby O'Bryan (42.66) and Arizona's Eric LaFleur (42.69) had the two fastest relay splits.

2004 MEN'S PAC-10 SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
BELMONT PLAZA OLYMPIC POOL
LONG BEACH, CA.

MARCH 6, 2004

25 YD.
