Indeed not, as after three days of very even competition the Tigers edged Coach Stephanie Wriede Morawski's Harvard Crimson by a mere 16.5 points, the exact margin by which Princeton led going into this evening's final session.

Harvard's bid for its first Ivy League championship since the 1991-92 season came up just short as Princeton edged the Crimson, 1361 – 1344.5 with Yale third (1211).

The Tigers held off the Crimson in the final 400 freestyle relay to claim their unprecedented fifth straight Ivy title here at Blodgett Pool.

Harvard entered the final event — the 400 freestyle relay – 14.5 points behind the Tigers, leaving the Crimson with an opportunity to take the meet championship in this race.

But Brown and Yale placed first and second, respectively, in the event, and when Princeton anchor Sarah Fraumann touched the wall third, Harvard's fourth-place finish wasn't quite enough to put the Crimson over the top.

After the top three teams came Brown (1,064.5), Columbia (937), Penn (936), Dartmouth (533), and Cornell (410).

Brown's senior sprinter Liz Daniels, a dominant performer during her four-year tenure for the Bruins, was chosen as Swimmer of the Meet, while Cornell's Kristin Rayhack earned the Diver of the Meet award.

Princeton began the evening by taking first in the 1650 yard freestyle as senior Sarah Fraumann coasted to the win in 16:36.04.

Harvard came back in the following event, taking three of the top five spots in the 200 backstroke, paced by a first-place effort by Michelle Bright — touching in 2:02.23.

Brown took four of the top five places in the 100 freestyle, led by Daniels' 50.20 time, and Harvard again cut into Princeton's lead with third- and sixth-place finishes.

Princeton gained a big lift in the following event when junior Stephanie Hsiao passed Harvard freshman LeeAnn Chang in the final leg of the 200 breaststroke to take a two-tenths win and lead a 1-4-5 Tiger finish. The win was Hsiao's second as she splashed to gold in the 100 breast Friday night.

The Crimson came right back to once again cut into the Tigers' lead as Harvard took four of the top eight spots in the 200 butterfly. Yale's Daphna Shafir won in 2:02.27, but Harvard's Kate Nadeau grabbed second in 2:02.64. The Crimson took second, fourth, sixth, and eighth in this event and the momentum was clearly shifting.

Raychack stunned the field with her first-place showing in three-meter diving, and Harvard closed the gap on the Tigers even more as the Crimson took fourth, fifth and sixth on the three-meter board, setting the stage for the final relay.

But Princeton's third-place relay finish coupled with Harvard's fourth spelled finis to the home team's hopes for an upset.

2004 IVY LEAGUE WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS

HARVARD UNIVERSITY

CAMBRIDGE, MA.

FEB. 28, 2004

25 YD.
