AUBURN made it a clean sweep at the Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Gabrielsen Natatorium on Saturday, claiming both the women's and men's team titles.

The Lady Tigers accumulated 846 points, holding off Georgia (756) on the final day of competition. Florida placed third with 680 points. On the men's side, the Tigers rolled up 1,008 points to outdistance Florida's 705 and Georgia's 469.

"It's always fun to watch swimmers have fun," Auburn coach David Marsh said. "As hard as our swimmers work day in and day out, it's satisfying to compete in this facility and have so many outstanding performances."

Georgia capped the meet with a record-setting showing in the women's 400-yard medley relay. The team of Neka Mabry, Sarah Poewe, Mary DeScenza and Kara Lynn Joyce stopped the clock at 3:33.75, breaking the SEC meet record of 3:34.19 previously set by the Lady Bulldogs and tying the pool record. Auburn was second at 3:36.44.

"It was a great relay," Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. "We were fortunate to win. It was a good race. Both teams have great individuals, but they also have great relays."

Auburn's men sealed their title by winning the 400-yard medley relay. The team of Bryce Hunt, Mark Gangloff, Jeremy Knowles and Derek Gibb recorded a time of 3:09.39. Georgia's team of Peter Osborn, Scott Gardner, Peter Verhoef and Cameron Hollinger came in fourth at 3:14.75.

The final night of competition began with Auburn's Adrienne Binder winning the women's 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 15:51.70. Binder eclipsed the SEC meet and pool records of 15:58.15 and 15:59.66, respectively. Georgia's Laura Conway placed third, Julie Hardt was sixth and Claire Maust was eighth.

Florida's Brian Hartley won the men's 1,650-yard freestyle, stopping the clock at 15:04.22. Georgia's Robert Margalis placed second.

Auburn's Kirsty Coventry took the women's 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:56.90. The Lady Bulldogs' Tricia Harm finished third, followed by Melissa Klein in fifth, Poewe in sixth and DeScenza in seventh.

George Bovell of Auburn defended his title in the men's 200-yard IM in record-setting fashion. Bovell had a time of 1:43.73, topping the SEC meet (1:43.91) and pool (1:44.03) marks.

Eileen Coparropa of Auburn won the women's 100-yard freestyle with a time of 48.57. The Lady Bulldogs' Joyce was second.

The Tigers' Fred Bousquet claimed the men's 100-yard freestyle with an SEC meet record time of 42.54, breaking his old mark of 42.63.

Kentucky's Kari Retrum won the women's platform diving. I
definitely plan to swim faster in NCAAs."

Women's 1650-yard freestyle runner-up
Sara McLarty, Florida
" This is exactly what I expected the race to be. I expected
them to be very fast. This was a great race and it has
been a great SEC meet. Congratulations to Auburn, but
go Gators."

Women's 200-yard individual medley Champion
Kirsty Coventry, Auburn
" I wanted to try to get close to the record time, but I'm very
happy. This is my best time ever, and this has been such
a great meet. I just wanted to go out there and have fun."

Women's 200-yard individual medley runner-up
Jaimie Ellis, Florida
" I'm really happy with this race. It's not my personal best,
but it's close, and I'm looking forward to getting back and
working on the little things for NCAAs."

Men's 200-yard individual medley Champion
George Bovell, Auburn
" My race plan was to get out quick and strong, but I was
feeling sluggish and it was a tough fight the whole race."

Men's 200-yard individual medley runner-up
Ryan Lochte
" I just wanted to race hard and give it my best. I know that
any race next to George (Bovell, Auburn) is going to be
tough. I'm ready to get back in the water and start fully
training for NCAAs."

Women's 100-yard freestyle Champion
Eileen Coparropa, Auburn
" I just raced the clock today. Becky (Short) and I are
seniors, and I can't think of a better way to end our senior
year than finishing first and third at the SEC meet.

Women's 100-yard freestyle runner-up
Kara Lynn Joyce, Georgia
" I'm very happy with my time. It was tough at the end and
I feel like I can do better. Hopefully once I'm rested and
fully tapered I'll be able to pull out the win for the team."

Men's 100-yard freestyle Champion
Fred Bousquet, Auburn
" This was a great race. Now I have to prepare for the
NCAA meet, and hopefully win another medal."

Men's 100-yard freestyle runner-up
Ryan Wochomurka, Auburn
" I don't think we have much else to prove in this meet.
We have some preparation to get ready for NCAAs, but
this has been a great meet."

Men's 1650-yard freestyle Champion
Brian Hartley, Florida
" I learned from my mistake last year at this meet. I knew
not to take it out too fast, and that I could just race
whoever was there in the last half of the race. Our team
and fan support at these meets makes it so much easier
to swin fast."

Men's 1650-yard freestyle Champion
Robert Margalis, Georgia
" To be honest, I'm pretty disappointed. I swam better
today than I have in the rest of the meet, but I still feel like
I could've done better. I'm looking forward to getting a
little bit of rest and it'll be a different feeling in a month for
me I think."

Women's Platform Diving Champion
Kari Retrum, Kentucky
" I never thought this was possible. I was really excited to
have this honor to represent my school, and I just wanted
to try my best."

Women's Platform Diving runner-up
Emily Hunter, Georgia
" I was really pleased with my performance today. There
was one dive I could've done better, but overall I'm
extremely happy. I've been battling a back injury and this
was the first time I've been back on the tower. To do well
and help my team points-wise is great. I really didn't
expect this."

Women's 400-yard medley relay Champion
Georgia (Mary DeScenza)
" This is such a competitive team, to get this result really
just shows how hard we've trained all year long. Auburn
competed really fast all week, but we're looking to have
some great races in NCAAs — we're all looking forward to
another shot."

Women's 400-yard medley relay runner-up
Auburn
" It's always tough competition between Georgia and
Auburn. This has been a pretty equal meet between the
two of us and this outcome is just going to make us work
a lot harder toward NCAAs so this doesn't happen
again."

Men's 400-yard medley relay Champion
Auburn
" This is what it's all about: The seniors coming together
and getting the job done. This is great."

Men's 400-yard medley relay runner-up
Christian Clausen, LSU
" The swim was awesome. I've been injured for four
years and this was my first race back. This is awesome,
it helps our whole team's confidence as we look towards
NCAAs."

Georgia Head Coach Jack Bauerle
" We're pretty pleased with our kids. They did a great job
over these past few days. We're pleased with third on the
men's side, and absolutely elated with the second place
finish of our ladies. On the women's side, we stayed with
them as long as we could, but we've made substantial
improvements from where we were a year ago. The point
spread that we're down to Auburn is much less than it
was last year and we're just thrilled with our progress."
(on the performance of Georgia's Robert Margalis) "To
have our thoroughbred Robert Margalis unshaven and
unrested, I know it's been hard on him, but I think it will
pay substantial dividends for him down the road in
NCAAs and set him up well for a repeat performance
there."
(on strength of SEC swimming) "This is an amazing
conference and you have the number one, two and three
teams finish up one, two and three and it looks simple
from the outside. The truth is, though, there were a lot of
small battles going on that make the dynamics of the
meet pretty interesting. You try to control the things you
can control, like helping your kids swim as fast as they
can, but there are other things, like the performances of
other schools that you can't control."

(on Auburn's performance during the SEC Championships)
"Auburn is a great team and hats off to
them. Winning this conference is no small feat. I think
they are the odds-on favorite going into NCAAs, but there
will be a few other folks trying to figure out a way to work
an upset. We don't give anything to anybody, so we're
just going to get back to it. We're a good team and we're
better than last year."

(on the performance of Kara Lynn Joyce and Mary
DeScenza) "Those two were just spectacular this entire
meet. Mary may be the absolute best racer I've had here,
and that's really saying something. She's got some
great swims in front of her, that's for sure. Kara Lynn was
great also. For a freshman to be doing some of the
things she's doing is phenomenal — taking races down
to the wire with seniors who have been around the bend
a few times is big."

Auburn Head Coach David Marsh
" This senior class has really just topped it all off. I knew
they were capable of a lot and they've done even more.
It's really sweet and I'm just so happy for these seniors.
They train hard together and now they can celebrate
together. I count this year's senior class as one of the
blessings in my life. We're soon going to turn to NCAAs,
but right now, we're just going to enjoy these
championships."

——————————————————————————————–

Saturday
