TEXAS senior Ian Crocker, the world record holder in the 100-meter butterfly, lowered his own American and NCAA record in the 100-yard butterfly on Friday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center as both of The University of Texas swimming and diving remain in first place after the third day of the Big 12 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships. The second-ranked men's team extended its lead over Texas A&M to more than 100 points, 719 to 613, while the women's 642.50 points leads Texas A&M (526) and Kansas (361).

In a meet in which he is not fully rested and unshaven, Crocker displayed why he'll be a serious threat to lower his world record this summer and compete for a gold medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. After setting the American record as a sophomore at 45.44, Crocker managed to shatter the record, along with three others, with one swim on Friday by posting a mark of 44.72. The time, which earned Crocker his fourth Big 12 title in the 100-yard butterfly, also establishes a new NCAA record, Big 12 Conference record and the pool record at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.

Sarah Wanezek also had a significant swim in the 100-yard butterfly on Friday. The 2003 Big 12 Conference Swimmer of the Year, Wanezek remains on pace to duplicate that performance this year with her fourth victory in as many races as she finished with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 53.35 in the 100-yard butterfly. Wanezek would later add a win in the 400-yard medley relay, meaning she has won 10 of the last 11 races she has competed in at the league meet. Freshman Katie Robinson and senior Laura Jo Leininger were second and fourth, respectively, in the event with times of 54.36 and 54.87.

Two Big 12 Conference records also fell in the 100-yard breaststroke as senior NCAA Champion Brendan Hansen and freshman Elizabeth Tinnon both set new standards. Hansen, who posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 52.50 and topped Jay Schindler's old Big 12 record of 53.24, won the event for the fourth consecutive year and remains undefeated on the conference and national level in both the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. Freshman Tyler O'Halloran was second at 54.64 and sophomore Christian Schurr was third at 54.93.

Tinnon, meanwhile, was .17 faster in the 100-yard breaststroke than Julia Russell in 1997 when she set the Big 12 record with a time of 1:00.83. With an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:00.66, Tinnon paced the field that also included freshman Leah Avilla who posted an NCAA automatic qualifying time from the third-place position with a mark of 1:01.45.

In diving, sophomore Mark Shattuck likely earned the 2004 Big 12 Diver of the Year honors on Friday after capturing first place on the one-meter springboard with a score of 355.70. The title was the second of the meet for Shattuck after he earned the top score on the three-meter on day two of the meet with a mark of 601.20.

Alida DiPlacido of Texas A&M won the three-meter springboard on the women's side, but Texas' Nicole Pohorenec was runner-up with a score of 531.10.

In the 400-yard individual medley, Texas added another first-time Big 12 Conference Champion when sophomore Wade Kelley outpaced fellow Longhorns David Kahn and Aram Kevorkian. Kelley touched the wall with an NCAA consideration time of 3:50.01, while Kahn, who won the 200-yard individual medley on Thursday, finished at 3:50.55 and Kevorkian was fourth at 3:55.09.

On the women's side of the 400-yard individual medley, Texas managed to take two of the top three spots but were unable to overcome Nebraska's Lauren Bailey, who won the event with a time of 4:17.57. Freshman Stephanie Anderson, who was victorious in the 500-yard freestyle on Thursday, placed second with an NCAA consideration time of 4:20.58 and 2002 Big 12 champion Alisa Schuknecht was third at 4:20.83.

The 200-yard freestyle saw two Texas swimmers earn their first individual Big 12 titles. Senior All-American Tony Diers, who has earned three titles as a member of a top-performing relay squad, posted the fastest time in the event at 1:36.86. Fellow Longhorns Garrett Weber- Gale and John Nabors (Spring, Texas) rounded out the top three at 1:37.15 and 1:37.42, respectively.

Sophomore All-America honorable mention Kristy Siminski was in a similar position to Diers entering her race as last year she competed on the 400- and 800-yard freestyle relays that finished first. This year, Siminski needed no help en route to an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:47.60, easily distancing herself from the rest of the field. Junior Kaela Humphries, who won the 200-yard individual medley earlier in the meet, was Texas' next highest finisher at 1:49.14.

The final event of the day saw both Texas teams post NCAA automatic qualifying times in the 400-yard medley relay. The women's team, which consisted of freshman Connie Brown, Tinnon, Wanezek and Jaclyn Faulkner, set a new Big 12 record with the top time of 3:36.48.

The men's squad of Aaron Peirsol, Hansen, Crocker and Diers, just missed a league record, but still finished with a first-place finish after posting a time of 3:07.89.

The 2004 Big 12 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships will conclude on Saturday at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center. Preliminaries are slated to start at 10 a.m. and finals will begin at 6 p.m.

TEAM STANDINGS (As of Feb. 27, 2004)
Men
1. Texas – 719
2.
