Both schools, however, have to prove their dominance again in respective league tournaments that begin next week.

Paly and Menlo capped regular-season championships on Wednesday with league clinching victories and take No. 1 seeds into their respective playoffs.

Palo Alto (6-0, 18-9-1) drilled visiting Lynbrook, 22-9, to wrap up the SCVAL De Anza Division crown, while Menlo (8-0, 21-9) captured the Peninsula Athletic League title with a 7-4 triumph over host Menlo-Atherton (6-2).

Paly will begin the SCVAL De Anza Division tournament next Thursday at Lynbrook High, while Menlo will start the PAL playoffs on Wednesday at Sacred Heart Prep. The De Anza finals will be Nov. 14 at 12:30 p.m., while the PAL finals will be the same day at 9 a.m.

“The playoffs will be competitive, and hopefully we will do well and peak into CCS,” said Menlo coach Keith Wilbur. Wilbur’s team had a tough time with M-A, pulling away from a 4-4 third-quarter deadlock by icing the match with three fourth-quarter goals. Matt Bjorner led the Knights with three goals. “It’s always a big game against M-A and they’re a good team,” said Wilbur. “We had to battle to win.”

“We felt good to play the seventh-ranked team in CCS,” said first-year M-A coach Ken Plough. “The league playoffs will be cutthroat with the top three teams.”

From Palo Alto Weekly

by Craig Wentz The Palo Alto High and Menlo School boys water polo teams proved once again this week that they are the class of their respective leagues.
