AS the second day of the Atlantic Coast Conference women’s swimming and diving championships progressed, things started looking better and better for Florida State University. By the end of the finals it looked great. On the strength of three event wins, the Seminoles moved into first place with 233 points.

North Carolina is just six points back of Florida State in second at 227, followed by the host Virginia with a total of 219. Maryland rounds out the top four at 190.

The Virginia Cavaliers swept the 500-yard freestyle to begin finals action tonight. Sophomore Rachael Burke took first place with a pool record time of 4:43.24 (NCAA A), with freshmen teammates Kimi Kelly and Rory Schmidt claiming second and third place with times of 4:44.87 and 4:46.85, respectively.

"It was awesome," said Burke, of UVa's performance in the 500 freestyle.
"It was actually more exciting that we went one-two-three. I didn't even realize that I broke the pool record until someone told me. I think going in there the only thing that mattered to us is that we went one-two-three."

In the second event of the evening, the 200-yard individual medley, Duke sophomore Katie Ness placed first with a time of 2:00.27. Maryland's Marina Mulyayeva touched the wall next at 2:01.01, with Florida State's Andree-Anne Leroy rounding out the top three with a time of 2:02.77.

In one of the best team performances ever in an individual event at the ACC meet, the FSU diving squad took the top five honors, collecting a total of 82 points. Breaking the meet and pool record that she set just a few hours earlier, Tiffany Manning (Mission Viejo, Calif.) won her first ACC championship with a score of 312.45.

Also eclipsing the record was junior Courtney McClow (Jacksonville,Fla.) as she posted a 301.65 to take second. Placing third in her first ACC meet was rookie Taryn Ignacio (Richmond, Ky.) with a tally of 287.00. Rounding out the sweep was Camille Akridge (Orlando, Fla.) at 276.70 for fourth and a fifth-place mark 274.40 by Brittany Lerew (Orlando, Fla.). “Virginia has probably been close to that in the distance events, but for the way they did it, they dominated the event,” Harper added on the sweep. “To go one through five is unbelievable. It says a lot about our program and a lot about Patrick and the work he has done.”

“I don’t think so. I think this is a first,” diving coach Patrick Jeffrey said of the sweep. “That’s just a coach’s dream. They worked really hard this year and I couldn’t expect any more out of them. They got behind each other, they worked as team, even though it’s an individual sport, they bought into it and it works.”

Senior Emma Dutton (Bradford, England) is getting pretty comfortable on top of the winner’s stand as she claimed her second championship in as many days. Seeded first after the prelims, she notched a career-best NCAA “A” cut time of 22.64 to win the 50-yard freestyle. On Wednesday she was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay.

Florida State captured its third title of the night by virtue of a disqualification. Originally, Maryland out-touched the Seminoles in the 200-yard freestyle relay, but the Terrapins were disqualified for leaving the blocks early. As a result, the team of Dutton, Emily Breen (Savannah, Ga.), Rachel Dong (Paramount, Calif.) and Lisa How (Preston, England) won the event with a time of 1:32.03.

In the first event of the evening, junior Angie Leach (Leesburg, Fla.) posted a career-best time of 4:57.37 in the 500-yard freestyle. Also bettering her time from the morning races, Laura Kenney (Plano, Texas) touched in at 2:04.73 to take 13th-place in the 200-yard IM.

“They really have the power to help the rest of the team,” Jeffrey added. “We’ve got so much talent on the swimming end that I think they can see how when positive things are happening that it can affect everyone and it gives everyone a shot in the arm.”

“It was a topsy turvy day for us,” FSU head coach Neil Harper said. “We were a little down after the morning swims. Even though we had some girls swim personal bests, we weren’t in the position that we wanted to be in. We regrouped this afternoon and we got a big boost this evening. Now we’re in the thick of things and we’ll just have to see how everything goes from here.”

Place School Points
1 Florida State University FSU 233
2 University of North Carolina UNC 227
3 University of Virginia UVA 219
4 University of Maryland UMD 190
5 Duke University DUKE 121
6 Georgia Tech GT 106
7 N.C.
