THE second-ranked University of Texas men's swimming and diving team concluded it's dual-meet season on Saturday afternoon with a 154-124 victory over SMU at Perkins Natatorium. The Longhorns finished the dual-meet season with a 6-1 mark, including four wins over Top 10 teams, and will prepare to host the Big 12 Conference Championships from Wednesday, Feb. 25, through Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.

By the time SMU won an event on Saturday, the Longhorns had already built a 28-10 lead on the heels of first-place finishes by freshman Thomas Sacco (Dallas, Texas) in the 100-yard backstroke and senior Brendan Hansen (Haverford, Pa.) in the 100-yard breaststroke. Sacco and fellow freshman Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) posted the top two times in the 100-yard backstroke at 49.39 and 49.64, respectively, while Hansen's time of 54.32 in the 100-yard breaststroke topped teammate Matt Molnar (Auburn, Ala.), who came in second at 57.03.

The Longhorns distance swimmers had a stellar day by taking three of the top four finishes in the 1,000-yard freestyle, including the top two spots. Sophomore Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.), the 2003 NCAA Swimmer of the Year, paced the field with a time of 9:26.11 and sophomore Aram Kevorkian (La Jolla, Calif.) was runner-up with a mark of 9:28.62. Junior All-American Nate O'Brien (Sammamish, Wash.) rounded out the Longhorns scoring in the event by placing fourth with a time of 9:39.56.

Following the 1,000-yard freestyle, junior John Nabors(Spring, Texas) and sophomore Wade Kelley (Marietta, Ga.) led a strong showing in the 200-yard freestyle. Nabors topped the five-person field with a time of 1:39.64 and Kelley was third in the event after touching the wall at 1:42.31.

In the sprint freestyle events, Texas added another nine points to its total despite SMU's Per Nylin winning the event. Junior Paul Wallace (Kirby, Texas) was just .03 off of Nylin's pace with a time of 20.84, while senior Tony Diers (Houston, Texas) and Weber-Gale were third and fourth, respectively, with times of 20.97 and 21.34.

Wallace would come back later in the day and add a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.62. That time trailed Rainer Kendrick (Birmingham, Ala.), who posted a runner-up finish in the race with a mark of 45.92.

Two other individuals touched the wall first in their events with senior All-American Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine) winning the 200-yard individual medley and sophomore Damon Rourke (Flower Mound, Texas) pacing the field in the 200-yard butterfly. Trailing Crocker in the 200-yard IM were freshmen David Donaldson (San Antonio, Texas) and Sean Riley (Tewksbury, Mass.) with times of 1:51.97 and 1:53.02.

On the boards, sophomore Mark Shattuck (Derby, United Kingdom) was Texas' highest finisher on both the one- and three-meter springboard. Shattuck finished first on the three-meter with a score of 337.57 and added a second-place showing on the one-meter with a posting of 316.19. Freshman Matt Bisordi (San Mateo, Calif.) earned a score of 303.97 to place third on the three-meter, while Linette's mark of 296.10 was third best on the one-meter.

Event 1 Men 100 Yard Backstroke
===============================================================================
Name                    Year School                           Finals Points
===============================================================================
1 Sacco, Thomas             FR UT                               49.39    9
23.89    49.39
2 Weber-Gale, Garrett       FR UT                               49.64    4
24.26    49.64
3 Clark, Ian                FR Smu                              51.37    3
25.37    51.37
4 Patterson, John           SO UT                               51.43    2
25.05    51.43
5 Hadley, Eric              JR Smu                              52.09    1
25.25    52.09
6 Weidemann, Alex SO Smu 55.12
26.39    55.12
—
