IN today&#39;s historic match-up between the #9 defending Pac-10 Champion UCLA Bruins and #3 Stanford Cardinal, the Bruins triumphed by scoring 151 points to the Cardinal&#39;s 92. <\/p>\n<p>It marked the second time in school history that UCLA has defeated Stanford. The first victory came in 2000, when the Bruins overcame the Cardinal 154-145. UCLA is now 2-22 all-time against Stanford. The Bruins improve to 7-1 on the season and 4-1 in Pac-10 competition.<\/p>\n<p>The Bruins were dominant in every event today and going one-two in four events. Kicking things off were freshmen Katie Nelson and Jane Imagane in the 800m Free. Nelson won in 8:33.13 and Imagane placed second in 8:40.12. In the 200m Free, sophomore Kim Vandenberg won in 2:00.68 and senior Malin Svahnstrom placed second in 2:01.41. In the 50m Free, senior Sara Platzer continued the Bruin charge by winning in 25.87. Freshman Amy Thurman came in second in 26.20. And, in three-meter diving, sophomore Sara Clark won the event, scoring 276.75. And, junior Janine Strack placed second with 259.80 points.<\/p>\n<p>UCLA went one-three in three events today. In the 200m Fly, Vandenberg, who leads the nation in this event, won in 2:08.84. Senior Kristen Lewis placed third in 2:14.67. In the 100m Free, Svahnstrom won in 56.68 and Platzer was third in 57.12. And, in the 200m Free Relay, the team of Vandenberg, Thurman, Platzer and Svahnstrom won in 1:44.47. The team of junior Lindsey Smart, sophomore Kendall Butler, freshman Katie Arnold and senior Jackie Lobdell finished third in 1:47.71. <\/p>\n<p>One of the highlights of the day was UCLA&#39;s sweep of the 200m Back. Senior Naoko Watanabe had an impressive win, separating herself from the competition to finish in 2:13.40. Junior Kim Scarborough placed second in 2:16.77. And, freshman Courtney Iversen placed third in 2:19.33.<\/p>\n<p>Other top Bruin performances were runner-up finishes by Scarborough (200m IM, 2:16.29), sophomore Shellene Catalano (200m Breast, 2:33.34) and the 200m Medley Relay finished second in 1:56.18. In the 400m Free, Nelson placed second in 4:13.14 and Imagane was third in 4:13.52. <\/p>\n<p>In one-meter diving, sophomore Amanda Blong placed third (266.55), Clark was fourth (243.14) and Strack was fifth (237.60).
