MADISON, Wis, February 3. UNIVERSITY of Wisconsin senior Bethany Pendleton has been named the Big Ten Women\u2019s Swimmer of the Week the Conference office announced Tuesday. It is the second such honor for Pendleton this season and in her career. She previously earned the award on November 12.<\/p>\n
Pendleton\u2019s award marks the seventh time in the 13 weeks that the honor has been given out this season that a Badger woman has been the recipient.<\/p>\n
A native of Hood River, Ore., Pendleton earned the honor based on her performance in helping lead host Wisconsin to dual wins over all three opponents at a Big Ten quadrangular meet last Friday and Saturday. She helped the Badgers post victories over No. 24 Minnesota (226-126), Purdue (238-114) and Illinois (253-98) by winning three individual events and swimming a leg on two first-place relays.<\/p>\n
Pendleton set new pool records in winning the 200- and 400-yard individual medley in times of 2:02.66 and 4:17.91, respectively. She also won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:49.28. Additionally, Pendleton was a member of the 800-yard freestyle relay that set a new pool standard with a mark of 7:26.78, along with swimming on the 400 free relay (3:27.36) that also placed first.<\/p>\n
She holds the school\u2019s top times in both the 200 and 400 IM this season and has achieved the necessary time standards to automatically qualify for the 2004 NCAA Championships in both events.<\/p>\n
Wisconsin is ranked No. 10 in the most recent CSCAA dual meet poll. UW is 9-1 overall in dual meet action, including a 6-0 record in the Big Ten.
