LUXEMBOURG CITY, Luxembourg, Jan. 25. AMERICA'S Mark Liscinsky won his second gold and set his second meet record here this evening on the final night of the Euro Meet Luxembourg 2004.<\/p>\n
The 22-year-old standout for Coach Rick Curl's Curl-Burke team in Baltimore raced to his second gold in as many days with a convincing 2:02.59-2:04.91 200 backstroke (lcm) over Ukraine's Anton Bugayov. Liscinsky's career-best from two summers ago is 2:01.91.<\/p>\n
Saturday night Liscinsky, a former standout at American University in Washington, D.C., won the 200 IM with his first meet record. Opening night (Friday) he finished a close second in the 400 IM.<\/p>\n
Tonight's top performance belonged to Germany's 26-year-old sprinter Stephan Kunzelmann, who won his second gold and set his second meet standard too with a quick 49.42 pr in the 100 free over teammate Jens Schreiber's pr 49.86. The latter won the 200 free Saturday in 1:49.19, giving him a pair of career bests for the competition.<\/p>\n
Kunzelmann's other pr and meet record came in the 50 free (22.60). His winning century time is just off the German record of 49.07 he set late last year.<\/p>\n
For each of his record-breaking swims Kunzelman earned 100 Euros (about $125) plus another 250 Euros for the victory, as did all winners and record-setters.<\/p>\n
Another men's record came in the 50 back where Ukraine's Vyachaslov Shreshov won in 25.76. He was also runner-up in the 50 free (22.66).<\/p>\n
Not to be out done by her male teammate, Ukraine's Iryna Amshenykova won the 50-200 backstrokes tonight (29.96 – 2:14.72) to go along with her 100 back title last evening, making her one of a pair or triple gold medalists. The other was Germany's Annika Melhorn, who won the 100 fly (meet record 1:00.15) to accompany her victories in the 200 fly\/200 IM.<\/p>\n
Spains's Marco Rivera was a double-distance champ, winning the 400 (3:57.78) and the 1500 (15:38+). His feat was matched by Switzerland's Flavia Rigamonti, who won the 800 opening-night (meet record 8:34.88) then added the 400 crown this evening with another meet standard (4:14.17). Runner-up in the 400 was Sweden's Ida Mattson, who was a double winner in the 100-200 frees.<\/p>\n
The 100 fly men's victory went to Ukraine's Mayshya Kokosha (54.89).<\/p>\n
