THE No. 17 Arizona State water polo team opened its 2004 season at the Michigan Invitational Saturday and fell in its first game of the weekend, dropping a tough 6-5 decision in overtime to No. 9 Indiana. <\/p>\n<p>The game, played in Ann Arbor, Mich., saw a pair of Sun Devils score two goals each as the team fell to 0-1 (0-0 MPSF) while the Hoosiers improved to 1-0 on the young season.<\/p>\n<p>After the Hoosiers opened the contest with an early 1-0 lead, the Sun Devils responded with a pair of their own to grab a 2-1 advantage heading into the second quarter. <\/p>\n<p>IU answered with two goals to ASU\u2019s one and the game was tied at three at the break. <\/p>\n<p>In the third and fourth quarters, both squads added one goal apiece to send the game into overtime, tied a five. In the extra time, the Hoosiers scored in the first of two overtime sessions and held the Sun Devils scoreless to take the game, 6-5.<\/p>\n<p>Katie Davis (Riverside, Calif.), the team\u2019s lone senior, and co-captain Heather Rempfer (So., Lodi, Calif.) each netted two goals in the contest with the team\u2019s other captain, Tessa Wyborny (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.), adding the fifth tally. Davis and Wyborny each assisted on one goal apiece in the game with freshman Ashley Bower (Bondi Beach, Australia) adding a pair of helpers in her first collegiate game.<\/p>\n<p>As a team, the Sun Devils scored two of their goals while the Hoosiers were down a player while IU tallied four of their six scores on the man-advantage. <\/p>\n<p>In the nets on the defensive end, Jennifer Sanderson (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.), playing in her first game following her transfer from San Jose State, recorded seven saves in the loss.<\/p>\n<p>Eager to redeem themselevs after the close loss, The Devils scored early and often on their way to the largest margin of victory in school history with a 20-2 defeat of Marist in the second game of the day at the 2004 Michigan Invitational Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich. <\/p>\n<p>Ten different Sun Devil players notched at least one goal in the contest, including contributions from three freshmen, to even ASU\u2019s record to 1-1 on the season while the Red Foxes fell to 0-2.<\/p>\n<p>Prior the contest, the Sun Devils\u2019 greatest margin of victory came in their second game of the 2003 season when they white-washed UC Santa Cruz, 14-0, in Tempe. In that contest, eight different Sun Devils netted at least one goal while defense recorded the program\u2019s first shutout of an opponent in school history.<\/p>\n<p>Tessa Wyborny (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) led the offensive output with four goals scored and added three assists in the game for seven points and broke two personal best marks. Her four goals are a single-game best in her career while the seven points are one more than her highest output so far at ASU. <\/p>\n<p>Joining Wyborny with personal bests was Ashley Bower (Fr., Bondi Beach, Australia). Bower, in just her second collegiate game, scored three goals and added three assists to help the Sun Devils to their first win of the season. <\/p>\n<p>Elaine Bentley (So., San Diego, Calif.) also rewrote her personal best entries with four assists to break her single-season bests of assists in a game and points (two each).<\/p>\n<p>Gili Kollan (Jr., Kiriat Bialik, Israel) also scored a trio of goals and added an assist in the game. Freshmen Katie Hedley (Fr., Lake Forrest, Calif.) and Lindsay Fraka (Fr., San Jose, Calif.) each scored the first points of their careers as each scored a pair of goals and added one assist each while Kimberlee Stevens (So., Lodi, Calif.) added the same scoring line.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the goal scorers for the team were single scores by Katie Davis (Sr., Riverside, Calif.), Lauren Jacobson (Jr., League City, Texas), Holly Newman (So., San Diego, Calif.) and Adriane Mota (So., Long Beach, Calif.). Adding assists in the contest were Davis and Heather Rempfer (So., Lodi, Calif.) with one each.<\/p>\n<p>On the defensive end, the Sun Devils held the Red Foxes to no goals on three man-advantage plays while scoring on both of their opportunities.
