Four-time Olympic Medallist Daniel Kowalski One Of Four New Life Members In The Swimming Australia Class of 2026

Four-time Olympic medallist Daniel Kowalski – one of the unsung heroes of the pool, a true leader among his peers and now the next generation – is amongst four new Swimming Australia Life Members, added to a who’s who list of the sport’s achievers and contributors from down under.

The humblest of champions who won his four Olympic medals – three in Atlanta in 1996 and one in Sydney 2000, Kowalski has been joined by fellow Olympic swimmer and legendary coach Ruth Everuss(Rome 1960) and a third Olympian and administrator Neil Martin (Munich 1972) as well as long-standing WA technical official Ian Arblaster as the Life Member Class of 2026.

The foursome join a celebrated list of swimmers, coaches, administrators and coaches who have dedicated their lives to Australian swimming.

For Kowalski, 2026 is also the 30th anniversary of his history-making feats in Atlanta where he became the first swimmer in 92 years to win medals in the 1500m freestyle (silver) and bronze in the 200 and 400m at the same Games – his proudest moment in the sport.

(It should be noted that Kowalski’s feats from 1996 saw him join fellow Australian Francis Gailey who in St Louis in 1904 created his own slice of Olympic history. At those Games, Gailey actually won medals in four events, finishing second in the 220 yards, 440 yards and 880 yards finals, and third in the one mile freestyle.)

Kowalski added a well-deserved gold alongside Grant Hackett for their roles as heat swimmers in Australia’s triumphant 4x200m freestyle relay team at Sydney 2000 which saw Ian Thorpe, Michael Klim, Bill Kirby and Todd Pearson win the final for the first time since 1956 and in world record time.

But it is Kowalski’s feat in ’96 that stands amongst Australia’s greatest Olympic achievements – with a sterling silver behind the great Kieren Perkins in an epic 1500m final and his bronze medals behind New Zealander Danyon Loader in both the 200m and 400m freestyle.

“My personal highlight was the silver behind Kieren in the 1500 in Atlanta,” Kowalski told Swimming World’s late Phil Whitten on his retirement in 2002.

“It was an end of a great week and to finish second to a great friend and an absolute legend made it that much more special.

“It was the race that literally stopped the nation back in Australia and I was so honoured to be a part of it

“My first team was the Pan Pacs in ‘93 in Kobe, Japan where I won three silver medals — all behind Kieren in the 400, 800 and 1500m free.

“But I spent most of my time running around getting autographs from other swimmers; I was in awe the whole time — especially seeing Janet Evans and Jeff Rouse.

“The sport gave me and taught me lot about who I am.

“Two non-swimming highlights have been addressing the UN General Assembly in New York City in 1999, delivering a resolution on behalf of the IOC, as well as my role as a UN ambassador visiting refugee camps. Swimming has also provided me with great life skills but, most importantly, it has provided friendships that will last forever.

“I will never lose the passion and love I have for our great sport. I have been so lucky to compete for Australia, an amazing country, with a great tradition and fanatical supporters.”
