Now, alongside his wife Nadina Zarifeh and sister-in-law Carla Zarifeh, he’s embarking on a different kind of swimming journey: helping shape the next generation at Aquaventures Swim Centre, one of Canada’s most established swim schools.

Founded in 1984 by Sharron Crowley, Aquaventures has spent more than four decades helping children build confidence, develop swimming skills, and discover a love for the water. Its acquisition by Hayden and the Zarifeh sisters marks a new chapter for a school whose history is already deeply connected to the family.

For Hayden and Nadina, the opportunity has been more than 15 years in the making. When they met in 2010, they shared a dream of one day opening a swim school where they could pass on the knowledge and passion that had shaped their lives. Fifteen years later, that dream has become reality, alongside Nadina’s sister Carla, who has spent 32 years helping build the very school they now lead.

From Olympic Medallist to Swim School Owner

Hayden’s accomplishments place him among Canada’s most decorated swimmers. A four-time Olympian, he won the 100-metre freestyle world title in 2007 and made history at London 2012, becoming the first Canadian to win an Olympic medal in the men’s 100-metre freestyle.

His career also includes one of swimming’s remarkable comebacks. After seven years away from competition, Hayden returned to training and achieved the Olympic A qualifying standard within six months. At 37, he qualified for his fourth Olympic Games in Tokyo, where he swam the 100-metre freestyle in 47.99 seconds, making him the oldest swimmer in history to swim under 48 seconds by five years.

Behind that comeback was a decades-long evolution of Hayden’s freestyle technique, born out of necessity. As a teenager, the traditional high-elbow freestyle recovery caused chronic shoulder pain that nearly ended his career before it began. Despite extensive physiotherapy, the pain returned with every stroke. Determined to find a lasting solution, Hayden began changing the mechanics responsible for the pain, eventually pioneering what would become his Open Arm Recovery technique.

Through years of refinement and coaching swimmers facing similar shoulder problems, Hayden developed an approach that has helped others swim free of chronic shoulder pain, with some even reporting the cancellation of scheduled shoulder surgeries. His technique faced its ultimate test when he returned for his fourth Olympic Games swimming just 0.15 seconds shy of his Olympic medal-winning time nine years earlier.

“Swimming has given me so much throughout my life,” says Hayden. “I actually failed swimming lessons as a child, but once I learned to love the water, it eventually took me to the Olympic podium. Now, I have the opportunity to bring everything I’ve learned back to where it all begins.”

A Family United by Swimming

In 1993, Nadina suffered two stress fractures in her lower back following a fall but continued competing through the pain, ranking among Canada’s top three swimmers and representing Lebanon at the 1997 Pan Arab Games. After a year in a back brace and five years competing with the injury, persistent pain and numbness in her legs forced her retirement.

Certified as a competitive swimming coach in 1997, Nadina dedicated her career to helping swimmers of all ages and abilities build skills and confidence, eventually specializing in learn-to-swim education.

She joined Aquaventures in 2006, revamping its upper-level curriculum by combining her competitive swimming experience with a progressive approach to teaching.

Nadina’s sister, Carla Zarifeh, has dedicated much of her life to Aquaventures.

For 32 years, Carla has been at the heart of the school, teaching swimmers, mentoring instructors, overseeing operations, and helping advance its curriculum. Her influence extends beyond the pool through relationships with generations of families, including former students who now bring their own children for lessons and others she’s welcomed back as instructors.

Her contributions to aquatic education earned international recognition in 2024 when she received the United States Swim School Association’s Ed McHale Educator of the Year Award.

Having served as a part-owner alongside Sharron Crowley and Lynda Catherwood, Carla now steps into a significantly greater ownership role, providing an important connection between Aquaventures’ past and its future.

Preserving a Pioneer’s Legacy

Recognizing the need for a more personalized, progressive approach to swim education, Sharron Crowley developed her own instructional program and founded Aquaventures in 1984. An early advocate for warm-water instruction, she understood that children learn more comfortably and confidently in warmer water.

When Aquaventures lost its original location in 1996, Sharron built Vancouver’s first dedicated warm-water learn-to-swim pool.

Today, Aquaventures features two purpose-built, 15-metre warm-water teaching pools constructed by Myrtha Pools, a supplier of Olympic swimming pools.

An internationally respected leader in aquatic education, Sharron shared her expertise as a speaker at conferences worldwide, hosted the 2009 World Aquatic Babies Conference in Vancouver, and received the United States Swim School Association’s Guiding Light Award before being inducted into its Hall of Fame.

Building on a Legacy

The new owners plan to build on Aquaventures’ exceptional curriculum and culture by refining teaching methods, mentoring instructors, and introducing programs while preserving its fun, supportive environment.

Brent Hayden, his wife Nadina Zarifeh (right) and her sister Carla Zarifeh (left) acquire swim school

For over a decade, Hayden and Nadina have shared their technical expertise through staff training seminars.
