IN a battle between two schools that recently eliminated their men's swim teams, the University of Kansas women beat the University of Nebraska 178-122 today at the Robinson Natatorium for their first Big 12 win of the season.

KU took home 11 first-place finishes in the 16-event format. The win is the seventh of the year for Kansas, which matches its season total from last year.

The Jayhawks' victory was sparked by senior co-captain Whitney Sondall and junior Miranda Isaac, who each had two individual wins on the day. Sondall swept the backstroke events, winning both the 100-yard (57.60) and the 200-yard (2:06.06) races. Isaac took home victories in both the 100-yard (1:05.72) and the 200-yard (2:20.40) breaststroke.

"This was a good meet today," head coach Clark Campbell said. "We are in the midst of some very hard, tough, grinding training. We rose to the challenge marvelously. The Big 12 is one of the top swimming conferences in the country. Our experience we gained from our meets this past fall helped us win today."

"I think today is a good indicator of where we are in training," said Nebraska Coach Pablo Morales, "We're obviously hoping to peak in the next five weeks, but I don't think the score today is reflective of how close our program is to Kansas's program."

The Huskers placed second in the first event of the afternoon, the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in a time of 1:48.13, before dominating the distance events, taking the top three slots in the 1,650-yard freestyle, with sophomore Mackenzie Clark taking the win with a time of 17:12.20. Freshmen Kate Wheeler (17:20.14) placed second and Casey Schnack took third in a time of 17:27.47.

Sophomore Esmie Holderman also put points on the board for the Huskers, taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle contest, touching the wall in 1:59.11. Holderman also took the title in the 500-yard free, finishing in a time of 5:10.87.

In addition, freshman Lauren Bailey took home first in the 200-yard butterfly after touching the wall in 2:05.83 and sophomore Courtney Petersen finished first in the 400-yard individual medley in a time of 4:28.42.

NU also scored points in the diving well, as sophomore Laura Lunn took first on both the three- (268.42) and one-meter (257.32) springboard contests followed closely by fellow sophomore Amie Buoy who took third place in the three-meter contest with 234.15 points and finished second in the one-meter springboard contest with 244.65 points.

The Huskers finished the meet strongly, taking first and third in the final event of the night, the 800-yard freestyle relay. McCauley, Wheeler, sophomore Alex King and Bailey led NU to a win, touching the wall in 7:43.46, a conference-best mark.
