{"id":656365,"date":"2026-10-30T08:17:43","date_gmt":"2026-10-30T15:17:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=656365"},"modified":"2026-10-30T09:28:13","modified_gmt":"2026-10-30T16:28:13","slug":"u-s-short-course-trials-day-3-prelims-live-recap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-short-course-trials-day-3-prelims-live-recap\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Short Course Trials Day 3 Prelims: Van Mathias Blasts American Record in 50 Breaststroke"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><em>U.S. Short Course Trials Day 3 Prelims: Van Mathias Blasts American Record in 50 Breaststroke<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The 2026 USA Swimming Short Course World Championship Trials continued with the Day 3 prelims from Westmont, Illinois.<\/p>\n<p>The events on the docket are the men&#8217;s 400 IM, women&#8217;s 100 backstroke, men&#8217;s 50 backstroke, women&#8217;s 200 IM, women&#8217;s 200 free, men&#8217;s 100 free, women&#8217;s 50 butterfly, men&#8217;s 200 fly, women&#8217;s 100 breaststroke and the men&#8217;s 50 breast.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Van Mathias<\/strong> saved the best swim for last in the session, setting the American and U.S. Open record in the 50 breast.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-world-short-course-trials-day-one-finals-ryan-erisman-moves-to-no-5-all-time-american-in-800-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day One Recap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-world-short-course-trials-day-two-prelims-tyler-ray-van-mathias-hit-records\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day Two Prelims Recap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-short-course-trials-day-two-mens-finals-ilya-kharun-nails-downs-100-fly-victory-to-rep-team-usa-for-first-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day Two Men\u2019s Recap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/u-s-short-course-trials-day-two-womens-finals-gretchen-walsh-regan-smith-secure-beijing-spots-as-world-records-fall\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day Two Women\u2019s Recap<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2026\/2026-SCM-trials-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Results<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here is look at how the prelims unfolded.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 400 IM<\/h3>\n<p>There were just five entrants in the 400 IM as the short-course focus continues to favor the sprint events.<\/p>\n<p>Cal&#8217;s <strong>Ryan Erisman<\/strong> took the top seed in 4:10.29, finishing a tenth ahead of Indiana&#8217;s Noah Cakir (4:10.39).<\/p>\n<p>Indiana&#8217;s <strong>Josh Bey<\/strong> snagged the third seed in 4:15.54.<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 100 Backstroke<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Regan Smith<\/strong> kicked off the women&#8217;s events for the morning with the ninth-fastest swim in history in the SCM 100 back.<\/p>\n<p>Smith cruised to a 54.75 to take the top seed in tonight&#8217;s finals.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia&#8217;s<strong> Claire Curzan<\/strong> took the second spot in 55.49, ahead of Wolfpack&#8217;<strong>s Katharine Berkoff<\/strong> (55.55), who broke the world record in the 50 back on Thursday, Oct. 29.<\/p>\n<p>Aquajet&#8217;s <strong>Isabelle Stadden<\/strong>, who trains with Curzan at Virginia, took the fourth spot in 56.17, setting up a packed final &#8211; always the case in this event in the U.S.<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 50 Backstroke<\/h3>\n<p>Without several of the usual names atop the backstroke events in Westmont, a new wave got to show the country what they are made of.<\/p>\n<p>Army&#8217;s <strong>Johnny Crush<\/strong> sprinted to the fastest time in the 50 backstroke. He earned the top seed in 22.95.<\/p>\n<p>Loyola&#8217;s <strong>Joe Haybur<\/strong>n took the second spot in 23.20, followed by Arizona&#8217;s <strong>Nick Simmons<\/strong> (23.30), Cal&#8217;s <strong>Lucca Battaglini<\/strong> (23.54) and Northwestern&#8217;s <strong>Stuart Seymour<\/strong> (23.60).<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 IM<\/h3>\n<p>The big names had some big swims for prelims in the 200 IM.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kate Douglass<\/strong> had the fastest swim of the morning, getting to the wall in 2:09.01.<\/p>\n<p>Teammate <strong>Alex Walsh<\/strong> was second in 2:10.2, looking strong in all four strokes.<\/p>\n<p>Alto Swim Club&#8217;s<strong> Lucy Bell,<\/strong> an NCAA champion at Stanford, took the third spot in 2:11.67 ahead of Louisville&#8217;s<strong> Fernanda Celidonio<\/strong> (2:12.06).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Phoebe Bacon<\/strong> took fifth (2:12.48) and <strong>Torri Huske<\/strong> was sixth (2:13.96), both looking to save something for the finals.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 200 free<\/h3>\n<p>Indiana&#8217;s <strong>Liberty Clark<\/strong> was out fast and hung on to take the top seed in the 200 free. She got to the wall in 1:52.80.<\/p>\n<p>Tennessee&#8217;s <strong>Camille Spink<\/strong> took the second spot in 1:53.71, followed by Cal&#8217;s <strong>Rylee Erisman<\/strong> (1:54.76).<\/p>\n<p>There will be more than three contenders in this loaded event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Simone Manuel<\/strong> took the fourth seed in 1:54.76, ahead of Indiana&#8217;s <strong>Alex Shackell<\/strong> (1:55.40), <strong>Chloe<\/strong> <strong>Stepanek<\/strong> (1:56.24), Sandpiper&#8217;s <strong>Claire Weinstein<\/strong> (1:57.50) and <strong>Torri Huske<\/strong> (1:58.90), who swam the 200 IM, just minutes before.<\/p>\n<p>In the finals, the men&#8217;s 1500 will be between the women&#8217;s 200 IM and 200 free, giving Huske a little bit of time to rest and reset.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Men&#8217;s 100 Free<\/h3>\n<p>Cal&#8217;s <strong>Jack Alexy<\/strong> threw down a 45.09 to take the top seed in the absolutely packed 100 free finals.<\/p>\n<p>Olympic teammate <strong>Chris Guiliano<\/strong> took the second spot in 45.17, while Cal&#8217;s <strong>Gabriel Jett<\/strong>, fresh off his win in the 200 back, took the third seed in 45.74.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana&#8217;s<strong> Matt King<\/strong> was fourth in 46.00, followed by <strong>Patrick Sammon<\/strong> (46.08), Cal&#8217;s <strong>Destin Lasco<\/strong> (46.25), <strong>Caeleb Dressel<\/strong> (46.37) and <strong>Grant House<\/strong> (46.55).<\/p>\n<p>Dressel had some outside smoke from Lane 2 last night, perhaps that will be the case again.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>Women&#8217;s 50 Butterfly<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> cruised to the wall a full second ahead of the field in a strong prelims swim of 24.42 in the 50 fly.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia teammate <strong>Claire Curzan<\/strong> was second in 25.42, well ahead of the rest of the field.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex Shackell<\/strong> (25.73) and<strong> Torri Huske<\/strong> (25.90) also made finals.
