{"id":656248,"date":"2026-10-28T13:24:23","date_gmt":"2026-10-28T20:24:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=656248"},"modified":"2026-10-28T13:24:23","modified_gmt":"2026-10-28T20:24:23","slug":"saint-leo-reinstates-varsity-swimming-three-years-after-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/saint-leo-reinstates-varsity-swimming-three-years-after-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Saint Leo Reinstates Varsity Swimming Three Years After Cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Saint Leo Reinstates Varsity Swimming Three Years After Cuts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Saint Leo University this month reinstated its men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming programs after axing them in the spring of 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The Division II program in Florida will return first as a club program in 2027-28 before returning to NCAA competition in 2028-29.<\/p>\n<p>Swimming was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/division-ii-saint-leo-university-announces-cut-of-swim-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cut in the spring of 2023<\/a> with immediate effect, just as it was set to swimmers to the NCAA Championships that year.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Read<\/strong>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/for-saint-leo-swimmers-ncaas-marks-farewell-for-program-being-cut\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">For Saint Leo Swimmers, NCAAs Marks Farewell for Program Being Cut<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The tiered return will allow \u201can opportunity to establish the foundation of the programs, build rosters and prepare for their transition to NCAA Division II competition the following season,\u201d i.e. a foundation that had been in place before the programs were terminated.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Megan O\u2019Reilly,<\/strong> the manager of aquatics and fitness at the school, is already in place to lead both teams. O\u2019Reilly swam at Catholic University before graduating from the University of South Florida in 2022. She is working toward a master\u2019s degree at Saint Leo.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/ncaa-division-ii-coverage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NCAA Division II Coverage<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Saint Leo University is always evaluating the quality and scope of its athletic offerings,&#8221; Vice President for Student Life and Athletics <strong>Marcal Lazenby<\/strong> said <a href=\"https:\/\/saintleolions.com\/news\/2026\/10\/6\/saint-leo-announces-return-of-mens-and-womens-swimming.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in a press release<\/a>. &#8220;The return of men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming provides another opportunity for talented student-athletes to pursue their academic and athletic goals at Saint Leo while bringing back two programs with proud histories within our university community.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Saint Leo touted the program\u2019s history, which was inconsequential three years earlier in deciding to disband swimming. The program made 12 straight appearances at the NCAA Division II Championships on the men\u2019s side from 2012-23 and 10 straight for the women from 2014-23, including that final year with the program\u2019s impending dissolution hanging over them. Henrik Dahrendorf won an NCAA title in the men\u2019s 200 breaststroke in 2019, the university\u2019s third NCAA champion in any sport.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As we look ahead to 2027-28 and beyond, we are excited about the possibilities these programs present,&#8221; Lazenby said. &#8220;We look forward to welcoming a new generation of Lions swimmers and building two outstanding programs that our university community can be proud of.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saint Leo Reinstates Varsity Swimming Three Years After Cuts Saint Leo University this month reinstated its men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming programs after axing them in the spring of 2023.
