Simple enough, right? Until you try to sum up thousands of laps, exhausting practices, team traditions, and the people who make showing up to the pool worthwhile. When I asked coaches from club, high school, and summer recreational swimming to describe their teams in three words, their answers revealed just how differently the same sport can be experienced.

The pool might be the same, and the goal might always be to finish, but the atmosphere changes dramatically depending on which team you’re swimming with. In one, everyone is chasing faster times. In another, the whole team is cheering from the sidelines. And in the summer, you might find your coaches dressed as superheroes.

Club Swimming: Pride, Persistence, and Pasta

My club coaches, Tina and Steve, both described a team built around hard work and competition, but with an emphasis on the relationships that grow alongside it. Coach Tina chose “pride, respect, and hardworking,” for her words, while Coach Steve described the team as “competitive, supportive/united, and resilient.”

Club swimming is where the pressure to improve is most noticeable. Practices are intense, the training is demanding, and everyone is working toward faster times. Swimmers push themselves, but they also push each other. When everyone is chasing the same goal, a teammate’s improvement becomes both a challenge and a reason to work harder. The atmosphere can feel almost cutthroat, but that intensity is also part of what brings the team together. Everyone understands the work it takes to get better because they’re putting in the same work themselves.

That connection builds the team and traditions. One of my favorite traditions of club swimming is right before the annual Thanksgiving Classic home meet. Each year the team gathers for a pasta party after practice. Plates of pasta replace the usual post-practice routine, while swimmers make signs to hang up and write inspirational quotes on stars to give to younger swimmers. The meet is a major competitive focus, but the team takes time to prepare for it together and encourage the next generation.

For a team so focused on individual times, the tradition is a reminder that nobody gets faster entirely on their own. The competition may drive the training, but the people sharing the pool help make it worthwhile.

High School Swimming: Inspiring, Adventurous, and Resilient

If club swimming revolves around constant improvement, high school swimming shifts the focus toward what a group of swimmers can accomplish together. Coach Juan chose “inspiring, adventurous, and resilient.” Inspiring stood out most for me.

Unlike club swimming, where swimmers are generally training at a high level with improvement as a central priority, high school brings together athletes with a much wider range of experience and ability. Some swimmers arrive with years of competitive training behind them; others are simply excited to represent their school, try new things, and be part of a team. The atmosphere is more relaxed, and the pressure surrounding individual times is lower. Instead of every practice feeling like another step toward a personal best, the season becomes about preparing to compete together and win meets.

The team spirit is always evident, especially in the cheering. Swimmers support one another regardless of experience or speed, and the excitement of a meet belongs to the whole team, not just the athletes in the water. A race is an opportunity for teammates to rally behind one another, whether they’re fighting for a win or simply gaining confidence.

That’s what makes Coach Juan’s choice of inspiring interesting. It seems to reflect not only the swimmers, but also the environment he helps create. A welcoming coach can make a team feel like a place where athletes want to show up, try something new, and contribute, regardless of where they fall on the roster.

The competitiveness is still there. Everyone wants to win. But high school swimming reflects a team that shows up for one another.

Summer Rec: Joy, Family, and Superheroes

Then there’s summer recreational swimming, where the priorities shift once again. One coach chose “joyful, family, and fast,” while my own three words were “fun, legacy, and family.”

The word fast has a different meaning here. It isn’t necessarily about times or races, it’s about how quickly the season seems to fly by. Summer rec is packed with practices, meets, traditions, and the experience of watching younger swimmers learn and grow. Winning is exciting, but it isn’t what defines the season. Much of the reward comes from teaching kids new skills, cheering them on, and watching them become more confident in the water.

At championships every year, the coaches dress up as superheroes to cheer for the younger swimmers. I got to take part in the tradition for the first time, joining the coaches in costume as we rallied behind the kids. It was a small moment, but one that really captures the spirit of this program. The coaches are never just there to run a meet or record results. They are there to make the experience memorable for the swimmers.

That sense of family comes from years of shared traditions and familiar faces. Swimmers return summer after summer, some eventually becoming coaches themselves. The older swimmers help the younger ones, and the community continues to grow as new families join in.

For me, legacy is the most meaningful of the three words. I’ve been part of the program my entire life, and it was one of the things that inspired me to love swimming in the first place. Now, as a coach, I get to help younger swimmers build the same kind of memories that made the sport special to me. The experience comes full circle: the kids who once looked up to the older swimmers can eventually become the people cheering from the pool deck.

Three Words, One Sport

The differences between these teams aren’t simply about how hard they train or how much they care about winning. They’re about what each team asks of its swimmers and what it gives back in return.

Club swimming demands resilience and rewards the pursuit of improvement. High school swimming turns a diverse group of athletes into a team that competes and celebrates together. Summer rec puts community first, creating traditions that last long after the season ends.

The coaches’ three-word descriptions may not capture every early morning, tough practice, or unforgettable meet. But they offer a glimpse into the cultures built around the pool, and the people who help shape them. Because while every swimmer knows what it means to chase the clock, the reason they keep coming back can look very different.

Three Words, Three Worlds: How Coaches Describe Their Different Swim Teams Describe an entire swim team in three words.
