BEHIND two first-place finishes from sophomore Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) the No. 5 ranked Florida men’s swimming and diving team won the Dallas Morning News Classic Saturday evening at Perkins Natatorium.

The Gators won the meet with 359 points, while No. 14 Texas A&M finished second with 329, followed by SMU (314) and South Carolina (266).

Lochte won the 500-yard freestyle (4:21.69) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:47.76) with season best and NCAA provisional qualifying times, and was named the Swimmer of the Meet.

Senior Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) won the 200-yard backstroke with an NCAA provisional time of 1:46.49, while senior Carlos Jayme (Goias, Brazil) claimed top honors in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.15.

Junior Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) took first in the 200-yard butterfly with a season best time of 1:49.20, while Florida’s 200-yard freestyle relay team also registered a season best time. Jayme, junior Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil), Lochte and Sioui won the event with a time of 1:21.80.

The second place finish marked A&M's best-ever at the event. The Aggies earned third place in 2000 and fifth in 2002. A&M also managed to double the number of individual events they had ever won at the meet, capturing five wins over the past two days.

The Aggies started the day off on the right foot by taking first place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The quartet of Scott Newmann, Josh Hill, Dan Blanchard and Matt Rose touched out Florida 3:01.03-3:01.17.

Florida proceeded to win the next four events to stretch a 190-180 lead to 240-223 before A&M's breaststrokers finished off a perfect three-day stretch. Sophomore Alex Dawson cruised to an easy win in the consolation final of the 200 breast (2:03.41) while junior Alfredo Jacobo finished off a four-for-four weekend with a win in the championship final (2:01.80). Dawson also earned a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley with a season-best time of 1:52.41.

Junior Dan Blanchard won the consolation final of 100 freestyle in 45.96 but 11-time All-American Matt Rose was upset in the championship final of a sprint free event for the second straight day. Florida's Carls Jayme finished first in 44.15 while Rose was third in 44.88.

Senior All-American diver Adam Morgan was edged out for the top spot on the three-meter springboard by freshman Philip Griffin of SMU 315.20-303.80.

A&M's 200 freestyle relay of Calvin Zielsdorf, Blanchard, Rose and Scott Mueller capped the meet off with a second place finish.
