SALT LAKE CITY, January 18. THE Utah women\u2019s swimming and diving team earned a big conference win on Saturday. Utah defeated Colorado State 128-109, improving its conference record to 4-0, as they now sit alone atop the standings. <\/p>\n
Senior Kristen Kaiser swam well as she won the 200 free in her final home meet. Kaiser\u2019s time of 1:53.95 was part of a strong start that propelled the Utes to a huge victory. <\/p>\n
\u201cKristen deserves a lot of credit. She not only has hung in there for four years but she did a great job today for us,\u201d said Head Coach Michael Litzinger. The win marks the first time in the Litzinger tenure that Utah has beaten the Rams. <\/p>\n
Utah got off to an emotional start as the 200 medley relay team of Leah Jensen, Tessa Greegor, Kendall Smith and Melissa Young, won the event by .01 of a second in 1:48.34. <\/p>\n
The Utes kept the momentum going, winning the next four events as both Marta Stepanczuk and Amy Barefield won two events each. Stepanczuk won the 1000 free (10:22.94) and the 500 free (5:03.56). Barefield added victories in the 50 free (24.44) and 100 free (52.64). <\/p>\n
\u201cThe turning point of the meet was the first relay, our relay squad went out their and upset the defending conference champions in that event,\u201d said Litzinger. \u201cWe knew that it would be a battle and we had to come out well prepared.\u201d <\/p>\n
The Ute women had the meet locked up with one event left to swim. <\/p>\n
With the victory, Utah is the only unbeaten team left in the Mountain West Conference. The team will now travel to Wyoming for a meet on Jan. 22, followed by Air Force on Jan. 24.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
