Steenbergen and Coetze were consistent throughout the World Cup, earning $100,000 bonuses for their efforts.

Steenbergen was the dominant performer of the circuit, notching a quartet of Triple Crowns during action that started in Baku, Azerbaijan, moved to Tashkent, Uzbekistan and concluded in Astana, Kazakhstan. The first Dutch athlete to win the overall title, Steenbergen packaged sweeps of the 100-meter freestyle, 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke and 100 individual medley, and the Dutch Star clinched the overall title on the second night of the visit to Kazakhstan.

During her roll to the women’s title, Steenbergen set a European record in the 100 freestyle, going 50.32 during the second leg. The points crown is the latest major achievement in what has been a spectacular season for Steenbergen, a factor on the international scene since the mid-2010s. Earlier this year, the Dutch superstar set a world record in the long-course version of the 100 freestyle, going 51.68.

“Really happy to come away with four crowns, because I did not expect that in the beginning, coming in here,” Steenbergen said in an interview with World Aquatics. “So I’m really happy with that. I’m really happy with my racing, and to end with a 55.4 in (the) 100 back is really good.”

Coetze is the fifth South African man to win the overall World Cup title, joining Ryk Neethling, Chad le Clos, Cameron van der Burgh and Matthew Sates. Coetze’s highlight of the series was a world record in the 50 backstroke during the second leg of the tour. Coetze also scared the world record in the 100 backstroke, becoming the No. 2 performer in history. He finished ahead of Russia’s Egor Kornev in the points standings.

“This one is hard work because it’s three weeks that you keep it consistent and stay focused,” Coetze said. “If I compare it to other races, it’s probably the hardest I’ve had to work for this achievement. So, no, I’ll cherish this one forever, and I’ll always remember this.”

Meet Page

Here are the final World Cup Standings:

Women

1.
