Competing in his final meet as an Indiana Hoosier, Barr placed 12th in the 200 IM and 15th in the 100 breaststroke, and he handled the backstroke leg for IU&#8217;s 200 medley relay. Two months later, he swam in the championship final of the 100 breast at U.S. Nationals while also reaching the consolation heats of the 50 breast and 50 butterfly.<\/p>\n<p>Those summer 2025 results already marked a sizeable improvement for Barr, whose top finish at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Trials was a tie for 39th. But he has taken a massive leap since then. Partnering with coach\u00a0<strong>Coley Stickels<\/strong> at Texas Ford Aquatics, Barr is part of a growing group of American men producing their best performances in their mid-20s when conventional wisdom might have suggested retirement after college.<\/p>\n<p>He proved that logic faulty with his results at this year&#8217;s Nationals: fifth in the 100 and 200 breast and sixth in the 200 IM. He swam as fast as 59.88 in the 100 breast, just over a year after he first broke 1:01. After a five-year hiatus from the 200-meter race, he returned in 2026 to drop his best time by five seconds, topping out at 2:09.68. And in the 200 IM, an event in which he broke 2:00 for the first time this year, Barr topped out at 1:58.55.<\/p>\n<p>Now, he has turned his attention to short course meters and the World Cup circuit, and the result has been arguably the most successful two-week stretch of his career. During the first stop in Baku, Azerbaijan, Barr recorded a trio of victories, in the 200 breast, 100 IM and 200 IM. He clocked 51.57 and 1:51.34 in the medley races, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-cup-baku-day-three-finals-yu-yiting-rips-asian-record-in-200-im-steenbergen-and-kornev-continue-to-shine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he concluded the meet with a time of 2:01.73 in the 200 breast<\/a>, allowing him to hold off world-record holder <strong>Caspar Corbeau<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After that massive win, Barr gave credit for his career renaissance to his new approach to the sport. I switched coaches about a year ago, and it really changed the way I approached swimming,&#8221; Barr said in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DeEXoX2ID7T\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on-deck interview with World Aquatics<\/a>. &#8220;I&#8217;ve just been having a lot more fun with it, not making it the No. 1 thing in my life. Shout-out my cat, Eugene, he&#8217;s the No. 1 thing in my life. I&#8217;m just having fun, enjoying it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He experienced another strong run at the second World Cup stop in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. He placed second in the 100 breast behind Russian veteran <strong>Kirill Prigoda<\/strong> while beating Corbeau and\u00a0<strong>Qin Haiyang<\/strong>, a past world champion in the event. Barr <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-cup-tashkent-day-1-finals-cam-mcevoy-moves-to-no-2-all-time-in-50-freestyle-marrit-steenbergen-pops-european-record\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">again won the 100 IM<\/a>, this time in a time of 51.05, and although he fell to fifth in the 200 IM, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-cup-tashkent-day-3-finals-marrit-steenbergen-blisters-european-record-in-100-free-pieter-coetze-just-misses-wr-in-100-back\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">picked up another head-to-head win over Corbeau in the 200 breast<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Barr will have one more test against international competition as the World Cup concludes this week in Astana, Kazakhstan. Two weeks later, he could contend for a spot on the U.S. team for the Short Course World Championships at the American selection meet set to take place in Westmont, Ill., October 28-31.
