Behind times of 51.77 and 51.71 at the Commonwealth Games, Coetze notched the second- and third-fastest performances in history. The global mark of 51.60, set in 2022 by Italian Thomas Ceccon, is undoubtedly in Coetze’s sights on the way to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

However, if the South African eventually tracks down Ceccon’s mark, it won’t signify the first world record of his career.

Last week, when the World Aquatics World Cup visited Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Coetze secured his first world record, clocking 22.09 in the short-course version of the 50 backstroke. That time broke the previous standard of 22.11, held by Russian Kliment Kolesnikov. For Coetze, the effort was the latest accolade in a career that is quickly piling up impressive accomplishments.

After winning the world title in the 100 backstroke in 2025, Coetze followed with a sweep of the backstroke events at the Commonwealth Games. He is now excelling on the World Cup circuit, with the last stop scheduled for later this week in Kazakhstan. Once the tour concludes, Coetze is eager to appreciate his initial world record.

“It’s definitely a different feeling to anything else that I’ve accomplished so far,” Coetze said during a conference call arranged by World Aquatics. “I don’t know if it’s fully something (appreciated) yet, but breaking a world record, I feel like definitely does elevate (me) to a new level. I’ll take the next few days so that it sinks in and regroup for the next leg because I was pretty close there (Saturday) in the 100 back as well. And I know there are some things I can work on. And, yeah, after all three legs are done, I can sit back and think about everything for a little bit and realize how far I’ve come.”

Coetze has established himself as a well-rounded backstroker, capable of flourishing from 50 meters through the 200 distance. He medaled in all three disciplines at the 2025 World Champs in Singapore and was just shy of the short-course world record in the 100 backstroke on Saturday, going 48.21 for the World Cup win. That time sits No. 2 in history, trailing only the 48.16 world record of Hungarian star Hubert Kos.

Back in 2022, Coetze accounced a plan to compete collegiately in the United States, a verbal commitment given to Cal-Berkeley. Over time, Coetze opted to adjust those plans and remain in South Africa with coach Rocco Meiring. Together, Coetze and Meiring have found considerable success, and Coetze is thrilled to have remained home – close to friends and family.

“Back when I made the decision not to go overseas when I was 18, a lot of things were taken into account, but the main thing was just that I love South Africa, and a lot of the people around me in South Africa,” Coetze said. “I didn’t want to leave home. I would miss it too much, and what I was doing was working decently well at the time, and I think it’s working better now. The decision has paid off quite well so far.”

Coetze has enjoyed his World Cup adventure, but is also eager to return to training. He indicated that next year, on the way to the World Championships in Budapest and with the Olympics on the horizon, will be a more training-based campaign. Yet, the opportunity to race at a high level for three straight weeks is also beneficial, as multiple races provide data to review.

“The World Cups are so perfect for that because you can look at the videos and see where you went wrong or see where you’re good,” Coetze said. “And week by week, you can improve and you take those lessons moving forward. So those are the benefits of racing a lot, and then obviously training a lot, you can push your body a bit more because you’re not worried about a race that you’re swimming in two days or so. So you can really go through some pain, for the gain when you’re training. So that’s the difference. You need both. I always lean toward the training more. Rocco also does. So I need to convince him a little bit most of the time to do things like the World Cups.”

Pieter Coetze Riding World Record Wave into Final Stop of World Cup;
