World Cup Baku, Day Three Finals: Yu Yiting Rips Asian Record in 200 IM; Steenbergen and Kornev Continue to Shine

The first leg of the World Aquatics World Cup series along the Silk Road will wrap up on Saturday night in Baku, Azerbaijan, the meet having already produced several noteworthy performances. On Night Two, Russia’s Egor Kornev equaled the world record in the 100-meter freestyle when he clocked a time of 44.84, the same effort that Australian star Kyle Chalmers registered during 2021 World Cup competition.

Several other big names will be in action in Baku, and before the World Cup tour heads to Tashkent, Uzbekistan. South African Pieter Coetze is slated to race the 100 backstroke and the Netherlands’ Marrit Steenbergen, already a multi-event winner this week, will go to work in the 100 freestyle, where she is the world-record holder in the long-course edition of the event.

Here is an event-by-event recap of the Night Three finals:

Meet Results

Women’s 800 Freestyle

Singapore’s Gan Ching Hwee shattered her own national record in the 800 freestyle, going 8:15.73 to improve her previous standard by more than three seconds. Gan finished almost two seconds ahead of New Zealand’s Caitlin Deans, who covered the race in 8:17.51. Also medaling was China’s Chang Mohan, behind a swim of 8:17.74.

Men’s 400 Individual Medley

The United States’ Carson Foster backed up his gold medal in the 400 freestyle with a decisive triumph in the 400 individual medley, as he touched the wall in 3:57.23. That effort was one of two swims under the four-minute barrier and was comfortably clear of the 3:59.05 recorded by Russia’s Ilia Borodin. Foster led wire-to-wire, building a sizable lead during the early stages of the race.

Italian Alberto Razzetti checked in for third place, behind a time of 4:01.25.

Women’s 100 Butterfly

Roos Vanotterdijk of Belgium never trailed on the road to victory, a mark of 55.29 vaulting her to the top step of the podium. Vanotterdijk split 25.67 at the midway point of the race and pulled away over the back half to finish ahead of China’s Wang Yichun (55.87), the only other athlete to go sub-56. Picking up the bronze medal was Russia’s Daria Klepikova, who went 56.36.

Men’s 50 Butterfly

Coming off a world-record-tying performance in the 100 freestyle, Russia’s Egor Kornev broke his own national record in the 50 butterfly when he zipped to a time of 21.64. That outing shaved .09 off the Russian standard he established last November and enabled Kornev to easily defeat Singapore’s Teong Tzen Wei (22.01), who was the silver medalist. Third place was grabbed by China’s Chen Juner in 22.24.

Women’s 200 Backstroke

A stellar closing 50 meters propelled American Anna Peplowski to victory in the 200 backstroke, as she tracked down Canadian Taylor Ruck over the last two laps to win in 2:02.34. Peplowski trailed Ruck by 1.23 seconds at the 150-meter mark, but a final-50 split of 31.43 helped her rally down the stretch. Ruck collected the silver medal in 2:02.44, closing in 32.76. The bronze medal was secured by Great Britain’s Freya Colbert, who went 2:05.61.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

Several continental records have been broken during the opening leg of World Cup action, including by South African Pieter Coetze in the 100 backstroke. Riding the momentum of a sensational summer, where he was dominant at the Commonwealth Games, Coetze won the 100 back in Baku in 49.11, which bettered his previous African record of 49.35, set in 2024.

Coetze needed nearly every bit of his 49-low performance, as Russia’s Pavel Samusenko touched right behind in 49.24. Third place went to American Shaine Casas in 49.89.

Women’s 50 Breaststroke

A few races after countrywoman Roos Vanotterdijk was triumphant in the 100 butterfly, Belgium’s Florine Gaspard topped the field in the 50 breaststroke. Trailing Russia’s Ralina Giliazova by .14 at the turn, Gaspard edged ahead over the closing lap to pick up the win in 29.75, with Giliazova following in 29.81. Ireland’s Mona McSharry, who won the 100 breaststroke on Friday, was third in the shorter distance, touching in 29.83.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke

It’s been quite stop for Luke Barr in Azerbaijan, as the American earned his third victory of the World Cup with a decision over world-record holder Caspar Corbeau in the 200 breaststroke. Already the winner of the 100 IM and 200 IM, Barr eked out a win over Corbeau in a back-and-forth final in the 200 breaststroke. Barr led at 125 meters, but trailed with two laps remaining before returning to the front of the field to prevail in 2:01.73. As for Corbeau, who cracked the two-minute barrier last year, he was just behind in 2:01.80.

Rounding out the podium was Russia’s Kirill Prigoda in 2:02.42.

Women’s 100 Freestyle

Make it fourth victories for the Netherlands’ Marrit Steenbergen during the opening week of World Cup competition. Steenbergen captured her latest gold medal in dominant fashion, winning the 100 freestyle in 50.78. That time was well ahead of the 52.12 from Poland’s Kasia Wasick for runnerup honors. Steenbergen added to prior wins in the 100 IM, 50 backstroke and 100 backstroke.

Taylor Ruck reached her second podium of the night with a third-place swim of 52.38.

Men’s 200 Freestyle

Although best known for his IM, butterfly and backstroke skill, the United States’ Shaine Casas picked up a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle. Casas posted a time of 1:41.50 to finish well ahead of China’s He Yubo, who recorded a mark of 1:42.1:42.37. Belgium’s Lucas Henveaux was the bronze medalist in 1:42.88.

Women’s 200 Individual Medley

The final race of the session was dazzling, as China’s Yu Yiting ripped an Asian record in the 200 individual medley, clocking 2:02.80 to easily beat the 2:03.93 by Japan’s Yui Ohashi back in 2020. Coming off a multi-medal showing at the Asian Games, Yu led from the start and was followed to the wall by Dutchwoman Marrit Steenbergen, who earlier in the night won the 100 freestyle.

Steenbergen was second in 2:05.09, with Great Britain’s Abbie Wood taking third in 2:05.69.
