In the 100 free, it somehow got better, Kornev outdueling <strong>Cameron McEvoy<\/strong> and tying the world record of <strong>Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> in 44.84 seconds.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2026\/world-aquatics-swimming-world-cup-1-baku-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/world-cup-day-1-finals-cam-mcevoy-egor-kornev-set-for-dash-duel-in-baku\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Night 1 Recap<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All the action from Azerbaijan:<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 1,500 freestyle<\/h3>\n<p>In the timed final, <strong>Lucas Henveaux<\/strong> won gold in a surprisingly engrossing race. His time of 14:34.98 was just .43 up on Germany\u2019s <strong>Sven Schwarz.<\/strong> Henveaux was behind by more than five seconds at 1,200 meters and by 1.06 seconds as they turned for the final 50, but Henveaux closed the gap.<\/p>\n<p>Third was American <strong>Carson Foster,<\/strong> well outside his usual distance, in an impressive 14:40.83. Countryman <strong>Charlie Clark<\/strong> was fifth, with South Africa\u2019s <strong>Matthew Caldwell<\/strong> in between.<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 400 individual medley<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Yu Yiting<\/strong> built on her Asian mark in the 100 IM with a time of 4:24.09 to dominate the 400 IM. She was nearly four seconds clear of the field to win.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abbie Wood<\/strong> was second in 4:27.95. <strong>Chang Mohan<\/strong> of China was third in 4:28.76, ahead of Japan\u2019s <strong>Waka Kobori. Ellen Walshe<\/strong> was the only other swimmer to break 4:30.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 50 backstroke<\/h3>\n<p>The first step for <strong>Egor Kornev<\/strong> was a win in the 50 back. He went 22.23 to blitz the World Cup mark from Australia\u2019s <strong>Isaac Cooper<\/strong> of 22.58 from 2024 in Shanghai. He is within a tenth of the 22.11 from <strong>Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong> that is the world record.<\/p>\n<p>Russia had three in the top four and four in the top six. <strong>Pavel Samusenko<\/strong> tied for second in 22.51 with <strong>Pieter Coetze.<\/strong> The South African\u2019s time ties his African record. Kolesnikov was fourth in 22.99.<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 200 freestyle<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Siobhan Haughey<\/strong> continued her strong fall with a win in 1:51.08. She was 1.4 seconds ahead of American <strong>Anna Peplowski\u2019s<\/strong> time of 1:52.48.<\/p>\n<p>In third was <strong>Fan Yaqi<\/strong> of China in 1:53.07, three tenths ahead of countrywoman <strong>Yan Tiaoshan. Freya Colbert<\/strong> was fifth, ahead of Canadian <strong>Brooklyn Douthwright.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 200 individual medley<\/h3>\n<p>American <strong>Luke Barr<\/strong> picked up the win with a time of 1:51.34, a wire-to-wire victory over the field. Second was Italian <strong>Alberto Razzetti<\/strong> in 1:52.41.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Finlay Knox<\/strong> of Canada picked up third, just ahead of Japan\u2019s <strong>So Ogata.<\/strong> They were both in the 1:52s. <strong>Lewis Clareburt<\/strong> was the only 1:53. Ilia Borodin was further back in seventh.<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 100 backstroke<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> dominated to take home a victory, the Dutchwoman going 55.17. She was first at each wall and 1.3 seconds up on the field. Her third win of the meet puts her atop the women&#8217;s points standings after two days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Taylor Rick<\/strong> picked up second in 56.49. She stayed a half-second up on <strong>Anna Peplowski,<\/strong> on the back end of a quick double, in 56.97. Fourth was <strong>Abbie Wood<\/strong> of Great Britain, with fellow Brit <strong>Lauren Cox<\/strong> fifth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 50 breaststroke<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Qin Haiyang<\/strong> added another win for the Chinese delegation, rallying on the second 25 to get to the wall at the touch in 25.67. He snuck past <strong>Michael Houlie,<\/strong> the South African going 25.70. Russia\u2019s <strong>Kirill Prigoda<\/strong> was third in 25.88, and then it was another two tenths back to <strong>Caspar Corbeau<\/strong> of the Netherlands.<\/p>\n<p>The final 10 included an American in <strong>Brian Benzing,<\/strong> who was seventh. <strong>Arno Kamminga<\/strong> finished 10th.<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 50 butterfly<\/h3>\n<p>In a crowded field, <strong>Roos Vanotterdijk<\/strong> of Belgium worked the wall to rally form third to first, winning in 24.96. She was two tenths ahead of <strong>Sara Junevik<\/strong> of Sweden, who went 25.15. Junevik turned first.<\/p>\n<p>Russians <strong>Arina Surkova<\/strong> and <strong>Aleksandra Kuznetsova<\/strong> were third and fourth, respectively. <strong>Wang Yichun<\/strong> of China finished fifth.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 100 freestyle<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Egor Kornev<\/strong> certainly maximized his busy day in the water. In the 100 free, he not only swam away from <strong>Cameron McEvoy<\/strong> but did so as fast as anyone ever, stopping the clock in 44.84. That ties the world record of <strong>Kyle Chalmers,<\/strong> set on the World Cup circuit in Kazan in 2021. It earns Kornev a $10,000 World Aquatics bonus.<\/p>\n<p>McEvoy was quick in 45.36 but no match for the Russian. Russia had three in the top four, with <strong>Vasilii Kukushkin<\/strong> going 46.77 and <strong>Ivan Girev<\/strong> 46.92. <strong>Sean Niewold<\/strong> and <strong>Dylan Carter<\/strong> tied for fifth in 46.95.<\/p>\n<h3>Women\u2019s 100 breaststroke<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Mona McSharry<\/strong> swam away from the field in the second 50 go to 1:04.21 and win the race. She was nearly a second clear of <strong>Evgeniia Chikunova,<\/strong> who went 1:05.13. <strong>Aimee Canny<\/strong> of South Africa, the leader at the midway point, lost out to her on the touch by .03. Her countrywoman <strong>Rebecca Meder<\/strong> was fourth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sophia Angus<\/strong> of Canada was fifth. Also in the A final was a pair of one-time Olympic medalists, Russian <strong>Yuliya Efimova <\/strong>in ninth and <strong>Tes Schouten<\/strong> in 10th.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 200 butterfly<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Chen Juner<\/strong> finished off the night with an authoritative win in the 200 fly, his time of 1:49.37 nearly two seconds clear of the field. It\u2019s the second butterfly win for him of this meet.<\/p>\n<p>Behind him were a host of swimmers doing doubles. <strong>So Ogata<\/strong> built on his fourth in the 200 IM by taking silver in 1:51.24. <strong>Alberto Razzetti<\/strong> grabbed a second medal of the night by finishing third in 1:51.53. It was a tie for fourth between American <strong>Jack Dahlgren<\/strong> and <strong>Lewis Clareburt,<\/strong> another swimmer on a double, in
