Ed Sommerville Sizzles In Sydney, Setting A New Australian 200m Freestyle Short Course Record of 1:40.16<\/strong><\/p>\n

Brisbane Grammar’s Ed Sommerville<\/strong> has swum his way to seventh fastest time in history with his National record breaking time of 1:40.16 in the men\u2019s 200m freestyle on the opening night\u2019s finals at the Australian Short Course Championships in Sydney tonight – setting himself up for a podium challenge at the World Short Course Championships in Beijing in December.<\/p>\n

The 21-year-old clocking 1:40.16 \u2013 to cut 0.20 off Paris Olympian Max Giuliani\u2019s<\/strong> 2024 Australian record of 1:40.36 \u2013 swimming well under the Swimming Australia qualifying time for a World\u2019s berth.<\/p>\n

The member of the Australian gold medal-winning 4x200m freestyle at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games trailed Giuliani (Miami, QLD) through the first 25m before taking controlto punish the field with a world class performance.<\/p>\n

Sommerville, coached by Bobby Jovanovich<\/strong> in the Brisbane \u201832 Olympic city, took control to hit the front at the 50m mark, splitting 23.20, touching in a slick 48.13 at the 100m and 1:13.87 at 150m.<\/p>\n

His 1:40.16 moving him from 10th<\/sup> to seventh all time \u2013 just 0.33 outside Brit Duncan Scott<\/strong>\u2019s Commonwealth record of 1:39.83 and 1.55 seconds away from American Luke Hobson<\/strong>\u2019s world record of 1:38.61.<\/p>\n

Yong (Highlanders, WA) finishing second in 56.72, with Collett\u2019s Bind teammate Gideon Burnes<\/strong> (who set an Australian All-Comers mark of 56.94 in the heats) third home in 56.94.<\/p>\n

While teammate Armbruster joined the exclusive \u201c21 Club\u201d\u2013 winning the 50m butterfly in 21.90 – \u00a0breaking his own National mark of 22.00 seconds, set in the morning heats \u2013 jumping into the World\u2019s All-Time Top Ten – beating home another Bond boy in Jesse Coleman<\/strong> (22.22) and James Ward<\/strong> (Caulfield, VIC) 23.21.<\/p>\n
