Ellen Walshe Talks Paris 2026 & Reaping Rewards In and Out of the Pool at the World Cup<\/h4>\n

Ellen Walshe<\/strong> will return to competition at the Baku stop of the World Cup seven weeks after capturing the IM double at the European Championships in Paris.<\/p>\n

The Irishwoman delivered lessons in underwaters when monumental final turns were key to her clinching victory over 200 and 400IM.<\/p>\n

Both were claimed in Irish record time as Walshe made her maiden journey inside 2:10 for the 200IM in 2:09.81 following her 4:34.42 standard in the longer race.<\/p>\n

Casting her mind back to August in the French capital, Walshe told Swimming World: \u201cIt was definitely a huge surprise. I probably thought I could medal in the 400. I was coming in ranked in the top three, but you just never know on the day. It comes down to maybe the last 50, last 25 metres, even the last five metres, and I think for me, that kind of set me up really nicely.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo that was one medal. And then coming into the 200, I was in an outside lane and I just gave it everything I knew. In the middle lane, I guess you can kind of see around you, and the outside lane you can’t see anyone. And the 200 was more of a surprise than the 400 because I was nowhere near those ranked positions. but it was a really nice confidence boost for the next two years. I’d still like to be a lot quicker in them events, especially the 200, but it’s heading in the right direction.\u201d<\/p>\n

There were also records in the 200 fly (2:07.40) and the women\u2019s medley relay where she split 57.73 on the fly leg as the quartet stopped the clock at 3:57.26, her raw speed a great source of satisfaction for Walshe.<\/p>\n

Her Paris performances offered cause for confidence and optimism at the halfway point of the Olympic quad although she doesn’t read too much into it with a little under two years to go until the 2028 Olympics in LA.<\/p>\n

“I think there’s still a lot of work to do,” she said. “Obviously when you look across the pond, at Pan Pacs and stuff, the girls were a little bit faster over there and there’s a group of them going faster. So you know, we’ve all got work to do and it is a confidence boost, but again, it’s a clean sheet of paper every time you’re on the block in a new competition and it’s just building through the rounds or building through the meet.”<\/p>\n

Living At The Dublin Family Home As Her Parents Help Turn Vision Into Reality<\/h3>\n

Walshe\u2019s golden double along with Mona McSharry\u2019s<\/strong> silver and two bronzes steered Ireland to eighth in the medal table.<\/p>\n

The media shone a spotlight on the team with TV station RTE broadcasting the competition parallel to the European Athletics Championships.\u00a0Walshe and McSharry found themselves in the papers and online and on podcasts and TV.<\/p>\n

While her profile has grown, there\u2019s been no everyday change for Walshe who still lives at home in Dublin with her parents Michelle and Michael and three sisters, of whom she is the second oldest.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe live in a nice area in Dublin, but yeah, I share a room with one of my sisters and one of my sisters has her own room,” she said. “It’s not the ideal living scenario for an athlete, when all your sisters are on a different time frame. Some of them are coming in later, I’m obviously getting up earlier, I’m coming home to take a nap, they’re leaving for college. Like, there’s so much going on, right? But yeah, we all have different challenges that we face, so.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Walshe is navigating the world of elite sport, her sisters are making their way through college with much of the burden falling on the parents.<\/p>\n

It has, says Walshe, been challenging at times. \u201cThey haven’t been able to go on holidays or they’re trying to save to be able to watch me race in Paris,\u201d she said. \u201cThere’s been so many different things that they’ve done to allow me to do what I dream to do, I guess, every day of the week. But as I’ve got older, obviously I receive Sport Ireland funding now with being in the top 16 ranked in the world last year, so that does help a small bit. But again, I’m still living at home because Dublin’s very expensive.”<\/p>\n

Walshe \u2013 who turns 25 today \u2013 has a part-time job teaching children to swim at the Templeogue pool where she\u2019s trained for around half her life under the watchful eye of coach Brian Sweeney. She also teaches Pilates one night a week to make ends meet.<\/p>\n

There will also be the chance of financial reward at the World Cup series which starts in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 1-3 October. That\u2019s followed by Tashkent, Uzbekistan (8-10 October) and the finale in Astana, Kazakhstan, from 15-17 October.<\/p>\n

Walshe and McSharry have been invited on the Silk Road tour by World Aquatics and given a financial allowance to fund the trip, a contrast to the 2025 tour in the USA where the pair had to support themselves out of their own pockets.<\/p>\n

There\u2019ll be a prize pot of 1.2 million US dollars with extra bonuses of 10,000 USD for world records and the triple crown of winning the same event across all three World Cup legs.<\/p>\n

“It can be a lot of pressure,” she said. “And then again, like, what are you in the sport for if it’s all going to be about money? You know, you want to learn to race fast and always be fast. But again, to get a little bit of money is, is also a really nice thing, or it’s possible to get money there.”<\/p>\n

The series will be contested in short-course metres giving the swimmers the chance to hone their race craft in the latter part of the year ahead of the World Short-Course Championships in Beijing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI guess the nice thing about the World Cups is like every week you compete in the same event,\u201d said Walshe. \u201cSo, week one, you might be like, oh, I need to fix that for next week, and you’re able to fix it immediately rather than in Ireland, like we could have to wait three or four weeks to race again because there’s no facility able to put on another competition for us.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, I guess that’s the really nice thing about the World Cup: we can constantly be practicing the races all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n
