Learning to push through discomfort is part of becoming a successful athlete.

But that mentality becomes complicated when the thing we are pushing through is no longer just a hard practice.

When is an athlete actually “sick enough” to rest?

A fever, positive test or obvious injury makes the answer easier. But what about a sore throat? Nausea? Extreme fatigue? A headache? A shoulder that has hurt for weeks but still technically works?

That is when athletes begin negotiating with themselves.

Could I still practice? Am I actually sick? What if I fall behind? What if everyone else is pushing through the same thing? This is where swimming’s culture of toughness can become a contradiction. Athletes are constantly told to listen to their bodies, while also being taught to push past their limits.

The pressure does not always come from coaches, either.

As a college swimmer, I have felt guilty missing practice even when I knew rest was the smarter decision. Being an athlete becomes part of your identity. You want to be dependable. You want to show up and lead my example for younger classes. Eventually, though, “showing up” can become so important that athletes stop asking whether showing up is actually healthy.

There also seems to be an unofficial hierarchy of what counts as a “valid” reason to rest. A fever is measurable. A broken bone is visible. But fatigue, nausea, mental exhaustion, chronic pain or the beginning of an illness are harder for other people to see. Sometimes athletes seem to need proof that they deserve rest, a trainer’s approval, a doctor’s note, a positive test or symptoms severe enough that nobody can question them.

That raises a bigger question: Why do athletes feel like they have to prove they are sick enough to take care of themselves?

Swimming requires toughness. That should never disappear. But toughness cannot only mean pushing through. Sometimes, toughness is finishing the last repeat when everything burns. Sometimes, it is recognizing that your body is telling you something different.

Maybe the strongest athletes are not the ones who can ignore their bodies the longest. Maybe they are the ones who learn when not to.

When Are Swimmers ‘Sick Enough’ to Rest Swimmers are trained to be uncomfortable.
