We knew it was coming. Exactly when? Well, the timeframe is never easy to determine. But when 17-year-old <strong>Shin Ohashi<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-shin-ohashi-destroys-world-record-in-200-breaststroke-takes-event-below-205\/\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ripped a world record of 2:04.83<\/a> in the 200-meter breaststroke at the Asian Games, it wasn&#8217;t an overwhelming shock. Ohashi has been a rising star for some time, and he entered the final at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre as the world junior record holder, behind a mark of 2:06.59.<\/p>\n<p>Ohashi obviously took a major leap forward with his world-record effort, as he took the event under 2:05 for the first time and now stands .65 clear of the No. 2 performer in history, China&#8217;s <strong>Qin Haiyang<\/strong> (2:05.48). Additionally, Ohashi is more than a second faster than French superstar <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong>, the No. 3 performer of all-time (2:05.85) and the reigning Olympic champion from the 2024 Games in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Through the years, it has not been unusual for the premier 200 breaststrokers to be specialists over four laps. That scenario applies to the likes of Olympic champions <strong>Zac Stubblety-Cook<\/strong> (2020), <strong>Daniel Gyurta<\/strong> (2012) and <strong>Mike Barrowman<\/strong> (1992). However, Ohashi has established himself as a multi-distance factor in the breaststroke events, evident in his personal best of 58.54 for the 100 breaststroke (WJR) and top time of 26.98 for the breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>Via his world record, Ohashi has established himself as the man to beat on the road to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He&#8217;ll have the opportunity to cement that status at next summer&#8217;s World Championships in Budapest, which will serve as a dress rehearsal for LA28. Along the Danube River, Ohashi will see his primary challengers for the Olympic Games and those matchups will go a long way in determining whether Ohashi remains ahead of the field, or finds himself in a chase position.<\/p>\n<p>By claiming the first world record of his career, Ohashi wrote the latest chapter in Japan&#8217;s rich history in the 200 breaststroke. Dating back nearly a century, Japan has produced a dynamite contingent of distance breaststrokers, including multiple Olympic titlists, and its influence on the all-time rankings is impressive.
