{"id":653777,"date":"2026-09-29T07:32:48","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T14:32:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=653777"},"modified":"2026-09-29T07:32:48","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T14:32:48","slug":"last-year-caspar-corbeau-broke-through-200-breaststroke-barrier-whos-next","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/last-year-caspar-corbeau-broke-through-200-breaststroke-barrier-whos-next\/","title":{"rendered":"Last Year, Caspar Corbeau Broke Through 2:00 Breaststroke Barrier; Who&#8217;s Next?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Last Year, Caspar Corbeau Broke Through 2:00 Breaststroke Barrier; Who&#8217;s Next?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The world&#8217;s top male breaststrokers appeared on the verge of swimming the short course 200-meter race in under two minutes for more than 15 years, ever since\u00a0<strong>Daniel Gyurta<\/strong> got within a second of the barrier during the last days of the polyurethane-suit era in 2009. Others would get to 2:00, some even lowering the world record, but only in 2025 would <strong>Caspar Corbeau<\/strong> finally do the honors of breaking through.<\/p>\n<p>Corbeau <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/flash-caspar-corbeau-blazes-world-record-in-200-breaststroke-with-sub-200-effort-shin-ohashi-sets-wjr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">achieved a time of 1:59.52 last October during the final stop of the World Cup circuit in Toronto<\/a>. Before that meet, there had been no signs a world record was coming. Corbeau, who represents the Netherlands internationally but was born in the United States, had won in Carmel, Ind., and Westmont, Ill., in times of 2:01.63 and 2:01.68, respectively, only to go two seconds quicker in the finale. That erased the previous mark of 2:00.16 set by Russian <strong>Kirill Prigoda<\/strong> in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Corbeau achieved what plenty of talented competitors had missed in the previous decade. Gyurta, the Hungarian who won Olympic gold in the 200 breast in London, ended up lowering the world record to 2:00.48 in 2014, and two years later,\u00a0German\u00a0<strong>Marco Koch<\/strong> swam four hundredths quicker. Prigoda would follow with his top mark on the way to a short course world title, and the next time someone came close was when\u00a0<strong>Daiya Seto<\/strong>, a Japanese standout best known for his butterfly and medley accomplishments, clocked 2:00.35 at the 2022 Short Course Worlds.<\/p>\n<p>Barrier-breaking swims often come at the least expected times, as was the case with Corbeau. The former Texas Longhorn and Indiana Hoosier had already established himself as a forced to be reckoned with in the 200 breast with bronze medals at the Paris Olympics and 2025 World Championships, but this marked his first global standard and the biggest accomplishment of his career.<\/p>\n<p>But will that world record stand up through this upcoming season of short course meters racing? Maybe not, with Corbeau&#8217;s rivals now aware that a 1:59 is doable, and we should see more such performances at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldaquatics.com\/competitions\/5052\/world-aquatics-swimming-championships-25m-2026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Short Course World Championships<\/a> coming up in December in Beijing, if not before.<\/p>\n<p>Already,\u00a0<strong>Shin Ohashi<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Filip Nowacki<\/strong> look like the future in the 200 breast. Ohashi is the top-ranked long course swimmer this year, having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/shin-ohashi-and-yumeki-kojima-blast-world-junior-records-at-japan-swim\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lowered his world junior record to 2:06.59 in March<\/a>, while Nowacki captured gold medals in the event at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/commonwealth-games-day-five-finals-jersey-boy-filip-nowacki-wins-200-breast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commonwealth Games<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-day-four-finals-filip-nowacki-continues-british-breaststroke-tradition-with-200-victory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Championships<\/a>. The latter of those wins saw Nowacki, 18, come from behind on the final length to edge out Corbeau by eight hundredths. Aside from Ohashi, Nowacki and Corbeau, Americans\u00a0<strong>Josh Bey<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Gabe Nunziata<\/strong> are the only swimmers to crack 2:08 in the long course event in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>In short course, Ohashi has already lowered the world junior record on several occasions, including in the same race as Corbeau&#8217;s world record and again in March (days after his long course achievement) to a time of 2:01.24. The only active swimmer aside from Corbeau and Prigoda with a lifetime best under 2:01 is Spain&#8217;s <strong>Carles Coll Marti<\/strong>, who clocked 2:00.86 at last December&#8217;s European Championships. As for long course world-record holder and world champion <strong>Qin Haiyang<\/strong>, he holds a best time of 2:01.15 and clear motivation for a big swim on home soil this December.<\/p>\n<p>Some of these swimmers will surely chase short course success in the coming months, but for the first time in his career, the 25-year-old Corbeau is the one to beat, hoping to back up his global standard with his first career global-level gold medal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Year, Caspar Corbeau Broke Through 2:00 Breaststroke Barrier; Who&#8217;s Next?
