Anna Moesch Set to Continue Rise During Junior Season at Virginia<\/strong><\/p>\n

Entering her first season of college swimming,\u00a0Anna Moesch\u00a0<\/strong>had already been an Olympic Trials semifinalist, missing out on a finals spot in the 100 freestyle in a swim-off. She quickly became a multi-event scorer for a Virginia Cavaliers team on the way to a fifth consecutive national title while joining veteran-laden groups to win a pair of relay national titles.<\/p>\n

One year later, Moesch came in off her first World Championships appearance, from which she garnered a pair of relay silver medals, and quickly became a star. Following the graduation of star sisters\u00a0Gretchen<\/strong> and\u00a0Alex Walsh<\/strong>, Moesch joined with\u00a0Claire Curzan<\/strong> to provide the firepower behind title No. 6. Moesch captured the NCAA title in the 200-yard free in 1:39.23, becoming<\/a> the second-fastest swimmer in history, and she jumped to third all-time while finishing as runnerup in the 100-yard race. She took part in four first-place relays, this time as the lynchpin following her supporting role in 2025. Most impressive was a come-from-behind triumph in the 800 free relay<\/a> on the meet’s opening night.<\/p>\n

The summer season would introduce the wider world to Moesch thanks to her electric long course performances, first while representing the United States at the AP London International and then at U.S. Nationals. She had not qualified for the Pan Pacific Championships based on her 2025 results but quickly proved she will be a force to be reckoned with in the 50, 100 and 200 free for years to come.<\/p>\n

First came an American record in the 100 free in London<\/a>, a time of 51.94 that broke a seven-year-old mark held by\u00a0Simone Manuel<\/strong><\/a> and for a brief stretch gave Moesch the second-fastest time in history. She followed that with a 52.11 at the Indianapolis Pro Series meet a month later<\/a> before lowering the record again in a winning effort at Nationals<\/a>, clocking 51.88. Two weeks later at Pan Pacs, no one would come close to Moesch’s time in the individual 100 free.<\/p>\n

Up to that point, Moesch had been best known for her 100 freestyle success, but she would rip off an elite time in the 200 free a day later. She won the final at Nationals in 1:55.05<\/a>, eight tenths quicker than anyone else and matching the eventual bronze-medal-time at Pan Pacs. Finally, she placed second in the 50 free in 24.05.<\/p>\n

By the end of the summer, the 20-year-old would rank third in the world in the 100 free behind world-record breaker\u00a0Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> and University of Virginia training partner\u00a0Kate Douglass<\/strong>, who knocked off Moesch’s national record on a relay leadoff at Pan Pacs<\/a>. She ended up with the eight-best marks globally in both the 50 and 200, the latter event putting her as the top American in 2026 by more than a half-second.<\/p>\n

No reason to expect her improvement to come to a grinding halt in the coming months. On the contrary, Moesch has opportunities to blast her name all over the record books in short course yards and potentially meters. The fall season will see the Cavaliers<\/a> racing early and often, with a pair of early College Swimming League meets before a mid-October weekend at home in Charlottesville with a short course meters Pro Am followed by a dual meet against Florida. Then comes the USA Swimming qualification meet for Short Course Worlds, the CSL postseason and then finally a potential appearance at Short Course Worlds.<\/p>\n

In short course meters, Moesch could challenge the 200 free American record of 1:51.62, set by\u00a0Claire Weinstein<\/strong> in 2024. Should she qualify for Short Course Worlds, Moesch would take part in numerous gold-medal-contending relays as a preview of the role she could play for the U.S. women’s team in the coming years.<\/p>\n

And in yards, either this fall or during the spring championship season, Moesch will try to knock off some legendary standards.\u00a0Missy Franklin<\/strong> has held the 200 free American and NCAA marks at 1:39.10 since 2015, with no serious challenges to that speed until Moesch came up just 0.13 short in 2025. The 100 free mark will provide a tougher test, with Gretchen Walsh having gone 44.71 at her final collegiate meet in 2025, but Moesch finished only eight tenths off that time in 2025.<\/p>\n

Finally, Virginia returns its entire record-setting 400 free relay team from last year, featuring Curzan, Sara Curtis<\/strong> and\u00a0Madi Mintenko<\/strong><\/a> alongside Moesch. That group puts Virginia in the favorite spot in pursuit of a record-extending seventh national title.<\/p>\n

Moesch might already have secured her spot as the breakout swimmer of 2026, but huge opportunities await over the next six months before a summer in which she aims to stamp her spot at the center of U.S. women’s freestyle.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
