The University of Virginia will chase a seventh consecutive team title, the Cavaliers’ top-end talent and depth establishing them as the heavy favorites.

While some of the biggest names in the sport will lead their teams, here’s a look at some of the under-the-radar athletes to watch out for this upcoming collegiate season.

Tess Howley, Virginia

The women’s 200 butterfly was one of the most action-packed events of the NCAA Champs a season ago. From Texas’ Campbell Stoll, the eventual champion, to Olympian Alex Shackell of Indiana, it was a field loaded with top competition. In fourth place was Virginia’s Tess Howley, on the strength of a time of 1:51.69. Really, Howley isn’t that much of an under-the-radar swimmer, but she deserves credit for what she brings to the UVA program.

Howley has been 2:05-low in the long-course version of the 200 butterfly, a time that was produced at last year’s World University Games. Most recently, Howley was the bronze medalist at the Pan Pacific Championships, going 2:07.43 in the final. She was faster in prelims, clocking 2:07.13. Howley is also an elite backstroker, scoring at last year’s NCAAs in both the 100 and 200 distances.

As UVA chases its latest championship, Howley will play a critical role.

Kate Hurst, Texas

Kate Hurst is coming off a sophomore season in Austin in which she scored at the NCAA Championships in the 500 freestyle and 1650 freestyle. As she heads into her next year with the Longhorns, Hurst is carrying momentum of an excellent summer in the long-course pool.

At the United States National Championships, Hurst achieved personal-best times in all of her events. She checked in with a time of 4:06.45 in the 500 freestyle, went 8:28.33 in the 800 freestyle and clocked 16:04.46 in the 1500 freestyle. Those efforts produced finishes of second, first and second, respectively. Look for Hurst to transfer that success to the short-course pool for Texas, which finished third in the 2026 team race.

Hannah Bellard, Michigan

The Michigan women’s team was one of last season’s biggest surprises, earning its top finish since 2021 at NCAAs, placing sixth. This year, Hannah Bellard gives the Wolverines reason to believe they can improve, following a spectacular summer. A year ago, Bellard was third in the 200 butterfly and placed fifth in the 500 freestyle.

Most recently, Bellard flourished at the U.S. National Championships. She was the champion of the 200 butterfly, registering a mark of 2:06.86. She added a runnerup finish in the 100 butterfly, behind a time of 58.27. Also a contributor in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle, Bellard brings versatility to Michigan and will be a leading figure in the program’s search for a top-five finish at NCAAs.

Mila Nikanorov, Ohio State

Mila Nikanorov has developed into a top-flight distance freestylers for Ohio State and in the Big Ten Conference. At last year’s NCAA Championships, Nikanorov was fifth in the 1650 and also contested the 500 freestyle at the national level. Based on her long-course results over the past few months, she’s an athlete on the rise.

At the National Championships in Irvine, California, Nikanorov turned in a time of 16:13.80 in the 1500 freestyle, a six-second drop from her previous best. Meanwhile, at June’s TYR Pro Series stop in Indianapolis, she put together a swim of 8:26.24 in the 800 freestyle and she went 4:07.27 in the 400 freestyle.

Sophia Umstead, Virginia

With its superb depth, it is not surprising that Virginia lands another swimmer on this list. Sophia Umstead was the ninth-place finisher in the 200 breaststroke at the 2026 NCAA Championships, in addition to finishing 12th in the 200 IM. More, Umstead just missed scoring in the 400 IM.

At the National Championships, Umstead notched the biggest performance of her career, as she went 2:25.57 in the 200 breaststroke to claim the title. Her victory was defined by a superb closing lap, as she turned a tight race into a convincing triumph with the fastest split in the field.

5 Under-the-Radar Swimmers to Watch for Upcoming NCAA Season (Women’s Edition) The collegiate season is rapidly approaching, the latest push to the NCAA Championships set to get underway next month.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3,6
98202,133712,135006,133324,65067
post-652423","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","category-college","tag-hannah-bellard","tag-kate-hurst","tag-mila-nikanorov","tag-sophia-umstead","tag-tess-howley

5 Under-the-Radar Swimmers to Watch for NCAA Season

<meta name="description" content="Who are the under-the-radar swimmers to watch for the 2026 NCAA swim season?
