Survey Results Suggest Masters Swimmers Interested in Third Competition Group<\/strong><\/p>\n

Swimming World ran an informal poll during the summer, asking readers about possible competition category options for transgender athletes in U.S. Masters Swimming. The poll recorded a field that allowed duplicate responses from the same user to be identified. After removing duplicates, there were 68 unique responses.<\/p>\n

Respondents came from nine\u00a0countries and 16 U.S. states, representing a broad geographic range. The sample included swimmers of varying experience levels. Five respondents reported not swimming at all, 11 swim between 100 and 200 days per year, and 36 swim more than 200 days per year. Sixty percent identified themselves as current USMS members.<\/p>\n

Three respondents, including myself, identified as transgender. One respondent identified as nonbinary.<\/p>\n

This was not a scientific survey and should not be interpreted as representative of all USMS members. However, the results are noteworthy because they suggest meaningful support for a third-category option from a group composed overwhelmingly of non-trans respondents.<\/p>\n

69% of respondents supported adding a third category in some form. Support came from respondents across multiple states, countries, and swimming backgrounds rather than from a single geographic or demographic group.<\/p>\n

Only 31% preferred continuing the current policy that requires transgender women to compete only in the men’s\/open category.<\/p>\n

One respondent did not answer this question.<\/p>\n

82% of respondents who answered supported making a third category available.<\/p>\n

Interestingly, although there was substantial support for limiting participation in the women’s category, an even larger majority supported creating an official alternative rather than limiting transgender women to only the men’s\/open category.<\/p>\n

Membership Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n

One concern often raised is whether adding a third category would affect participation in USMS.<\/p>\n

Most respondents said a third category would not negatively affect their participation.<\/p>\n

    \n
  • 48 respondents said adding a third category would have no effect on their participation.<\/li>\n
  • 11 respondents, including myself, said they would be more likely to participate if a third category were available.<\/li>\n
  • 9 respondents said they would be less likely to participate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    One thing that genuinely warmed my heart was seeing that both of the other transgender respondents said they would compete in a third category if one were available.<\/p>\n

    As someone who has spent years discussing this issue with swimmers around the country, these results felt familiar.<\/p>\n

    Most people I’ve spoken with personally do not think I should compete in the women’s category. At the same time, almost everyone I’ve spoken with also believes I should not be forced into the men’s category.<\/p>\n

    That is exactly the middle ground reflected in this poll.<\/p>\n

    Why This Matters<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Current sports policies generally offer only two choices: transgender women compete either in the women’s category or the men’s\/open category. Very few organizations have seriously explored creating an official third category.<\/p>\n

    World Aquatics briefly experimented with the idea. I was personally invited to compete in its demonstration event in Germany several years ago. I declined\u2014not because I opposed the concept, but because it was an elite international competition featuring some of the fastest swimmers in the world. I’m an older, somewhat overweight Masters swimmer, not an Olympic-caliber athlete, and traveling internationally simply to make a statement wasn’t practical for me.<\/p>\n

    The concept deserves more consideration than a single showcase event.<\/p>\n

    Doesn’t a Third Category “Out” Transgender People?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    Some people argue that requiring transgender athletes to compete in a third category publicly identifies them. I understand that concern. But for many transgender women, being required to compete in the men’s category also publicly identifies us. For many of us\u2014including me\u2014being “clocked” as transgender is simply part of daily life. We don’t always have the option of remaining invisible.<\/p>\n

    As a former volunteer operator for a transgender support hotline, I spoke with transgender people struggling with the expectation that they had to fit perfectly into one side of the gender binary or the other. I spoke with parents who felt they had “lost” a son or daughter when, in reality, they still had the same child.<\/p>\n

    I believe that being openly transgender is not something that should be hidden or apologized for. Society is capable of recognizing that transgender people exist without forcing us into categories that don’t fit.<\/p>\n

    Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n

    This was a small, informal website poll. It does not represent the views of all swimmers or all USMS members, and certainly not all transgender swimmers.<\/p>\n

    What it does suggest is that there may be considerably more support for a third-category solution than current policies reflect.<\/p>\n

    Perhaps most importantly, support for a third category appeared in both situations examined by the poll:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Where transgender women are currently allowed in the women’s category, and<\/li>\n
    • Where they are required to compete only in the men’s\/open category.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      To me, that suggests there may be a broadly acceptable middle ground that has not been seriously explored. Finding that middle ground is increasingly urgent, because transgender kids need a place to play now\u2014not years from now after the policy debate is finally settled.<\/p>\n

      At a minimum, I believe these results justify U.S. Masters Swimming conducting a formal survey of its own membership before concluding that the current policy options are the only ones members would support.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
