En route to a dominant victory, Raito Numata became the fourth Japanese athlete to go sub-4:10 in the event this year, as he captured the gold medal in 4:09.82.

Sitting in third place after the opening butterfly leg, Numata moved to the front of the field on backstroke and was never challenged. Numata recorded a five-second triumph over the United States’ Yi Zheng, who earned the silver medal in 4:14.94. The bronze went to Japan’s Ayumu Negishi, behind a swim of 4:15.44.
