CHAPEL HILL, N.C., Jan. 12. THE Penn State women's swimming and diving team came out of its winter training session with a strong performance to upset No. 13 North Carolina 157.5 – 142.5. The Penn State men fell to No. 23 North Carolina 128-172.<\/p>\n

Freshman Margy Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio) paced the Nittany Lions women with
\na pair of wins in the 1000-yard freestyle and the 500 freestsyle. She
\nestablished a school record with a time of 9:56.59 in the 1000 free
\nand she got an NCAA "B" cut in the 400 free in 4:52.57.<\/p>\n

Senior Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.) also picked up an NCAA "B" cut in the 200 breaststroke with a second-place time of 2:17.49. She also won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.63) and helped teammates Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.), Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Co.) and Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.) win the 200 medley relay in 1:44.37.<\/p>\n

Also victorious for the Nittany Lions were Haupt in the 100
\nbackstroke (56.66), Freshman Erin Morris (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) in the 200
\nbackstroke (2:04.06) and Biedermann in the 100 butterfly (55.79).<\/p>\n

Junior Alison Riccobono (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and junior Corey
\nPagnotta led the way on the three-meter and one-meter boards,
\nrespectively. Riccobono took first on the three-meter board with
\n306.65. She also finished second on the one-meter board with 265.05.
\nPagnotta beat out Riccobono on the one-meter board with 265.25 and
\nshe took fourth in the three-meter event with 277.55.<\/p>\n

The men fell short against the 23rd-ranked Tar Heels, but senior Todd
\nMinnier (Avon Lake, Ohio) paced the Nittany Lions in some strong individual performances.<\/p>\n

Minnier won two events and helped teammates Shawn McLin (Sinking Spring, Pa.), Dan Velez (Germantown, Md.) and Daryl Northrop (Verona, N.J.) take second in the 200 medley relay in 1:31.76. Minnier also took first in the 200 freestyle (1:39.80) and the 100 freestyle (45.31).<\/p>\n

The Penn State divers finished strong as Marc Gastaldo (Winslow, Maine) won the three-meter event with 321.5. He took third on the one-meter board with 280.30.<\/p>\n

McLin also took third in the 100 backstroke (51.25) and second in the 200 backstroke (1:51.91).<\/p>\n

Velez was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:06.44) and third in the 100 breaststroke (57.63).<\/p>\n

Northrop finished a close second to Minnier in the 100 freestyle (45.88).<\/p>\n
