Johannes Liebmann, Kate Douglass Snatch Opposite World Records on Different Continents in Consecutive Minutes<\/strong><\/p>\n

The timing of this week’s major international competitions means that finals of the European Championships have been taking place concurrently with qualifying heats at the Pan Pacific Championships. Saturday, that meant world records went down almost simultaneously in events on opposite ends of the racing spectrum.<\/p>\n

In Paris, German Johannes Liebmann<\/strong> delivered a stunning performance in the men’s 1500 freestyle<\/a>. Liebmann moved ahead of world-record pace from the very beginning, recording an 800-meter split of 7:40.85 that was more than four seconds quicker than the pace Bobby Finke<\/strong> swam on the way to Olympic gold two years ago. The 19-year-old German maintained that advantage throughout, finishing in 14:26.79 to surpass Finke’s previous record by 3.88 seconds.<\/p>\n

Liebmann celebrated his accomplishment at 7:20 p.m. local time. Almost simultaneously in Irvine, Calif., American Kate Douglass<\/strong> stepped to the blocks to race the prelims of the 50 freestyle. The morning after missing the 100 free world record by one hundredth<\/a>, Douglass vaulted to a time of 23.49 in the 50 free<\/a>, surpassing the global standard that American teammate and training partner\u00a0Gretchen Walsh<\/strong> set in June by six hundredths. That record went down at 10:22 a.m., two minutes after the fireworks at the European meet.<\/p>\n

Both swimmers are on their way to historic years, having set themselves up for gold-medal contention in multiple events in future years. Liebmann had never represented Germany at the senior international level before this year, Sven Schwarz<\/strong>, Lukas Martens<\/strong>, Oliver Klemet<\/strong> and\u00a0Florian Wellbrock<\/strong> blocking his path to the big stage, but he has been simply brilliant this week. He previously won the 800 free in 7:37.59, lowering his own European record, but this swim established him as a 1500-meter legend, going from a best of 14:39.67 to smash through the 14:30 barrier by an unthinkable amount.<\/p>\n

Douglass, meanwhile, has excelled on the international level in several events throughout this decade. After winning Olympic gold and the 2025 world title in the 200 breaststroke, her sprinting has stood out the most this year. This marks the second time Douglass has broken the 50 free world record this year, having previously done so at the Indianapolis Pro Series in June (a week before Walsh set her mark). The 24-year-old moved to second all-time in the 100 free and third-best ever in the 50 butterfly at Pan Pacs.<\/p>\n
