THE No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men&#39;s swimming and diving team dropped a 215.5 &#8211; 191.5 two-day, short-course dual meet decision to No. 3 Stanford Saturday afternoon in Canham Natatorium. <\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich.\/Adams HS)earned a pair of individual victories and anchored the 400-meter freestyle relay to lead the Wolverine attack, but the Cardinal outscored the Wolverines 139-104 on the second day to take the victory.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan entered the second day of competition with an 11-point advantage leading 87.5 &#8211; 76.5, however that lead lasted only one event on day two, as the Cardinal finished 1-2 in the 400-meter medley relay. Stanford&#39;s 15-point performance pushed the Cardinal to the lead after one event with the score 91.5 &#8211; 89.5.<\/p>\n<p>The Wolverines bounced right back in the ensuing race as Vanderkaay captured his third event title of the weekend when he clocked in with a time of 8:05.40 to lead a 1-3-4 finish by U-M.<\/p>\n<p>Following Vanderkaay into the wall was Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario\/Oakville Trafalger HS) and Brendan Neligan (Hempstead, N.Y.\/Archbishop Molloy HS), who placed third and fourth with times of 8:05.74 and 8:07.47, respectively. The 1-3-4 showing by the Wolverines helped them regain the lead as the score stood at 103.5 &#8211; 96.5.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Ketchum&#39;s (Cincinnati, Ohio\/Sycamore HS) victory in the 200-meter freestyle helped increase U-M&#39;s lead to 115.5 &#8211; 103.5, as the senior captain earned NCAA consideration status with a winning time of 1:47.94. Sophomore Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn.\/Webb School) was third in the event with a &#39;B&#39; standard qualifying time of 1:48.90.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford responded with a pair of 1-2-3 finishes in the next two events in the pool to claim a 14 point lead, 135.5 &#8211; 121.5, through five events. <\/p>\n<p>After the conclusion of the one-meter diving and 200-meter butterfly, Stanford held a 156.5 &#8211; 138.5 advantage, though Tarwater helped Michigan&#39;s cause with a victory in the butterfly with an NCAA consideration time of 1:59.06.<\/p>\n<p>Stanford extended its lead to 170.5 &#8211; 143.5 following the 100-meter freestyle in which Ketchum turned in a runner-up showing in 49.65. The Cardinal&#39;s lead swelled to 183.5 &#8211; 149.5 after the 200-meter backstroke as Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich.\/Holland HS) was the leading Wolverine in the race placing second at 1:56.43. The time was just 0.34 seconds shy of the NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 1:56.10.<\/p>\n<p>Vanderkaay earned his second win of the afternoon when he touched the wall in 3:50.23, his second NCAA consideration clocking of the day. Hurd finished a close second with a &#39;B&#39; standard performance of 3:50.69, pulling Michigan within 27 at 189.5 &#8211; 162.5.<\/p>\n<p>Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa.\/Marple Newtown HS) earned his second diving victory of the season with an NCAA zone diving qualifying mark of 338.33 to win the three-meter springboard, however the score remained in favor of the Cardinal at 196.5 &#8211; 174.5.<\/p>\n<p>After a Stanford victory in the 200-meter breaststroke pushing the score to 209.5 &#8211; 180.5, Michigan ended the two-day dual with a win in the 400-meter freestyle relay, clocking in with an NCAA consideration time of 3:19.39.<\/p>\n<p>                      MICHIGAN VS.
