THE University of Virginia topped the Tennessee Volunteers today for the first time in five years.<\/p>\n<p>The contest had promised to be an intriguing meet as UVA was ranked<br \/>\n11th in the Coaches Poll and UT was 12th.  But a complete team effort from<br \/>\nby the Cavs resulted in a convincing Virginia victory, 135-106.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia started off with an important victory in the Medley Relay with<br \/>\nWagner, Raab, Rogulj, and Kerpelman going 3:16.97.  <\/p>\n<p>Virginia distance swimmers proved their dominance with a 1-2-4 finish in the 1000 led by Fran Crippen in 9:00.11.  <\/p>\n<p>Ian Prichard had a very gutsy race in the 200 Free to take the 3rd straight event for the Hoos.  Ian came from behind with 50 yards to go to take the event in a time of 1:39.51.  <\/p>\n<p>Tennessee started to close the gap with victories in the 50 and 200 IM and 1 meter diving.  But that was as close as things got as the Hoos took 8 of the final 9 events.<\/p>\n<p>After the break, Michael Raab and Chris Cooper went 1-2 in the 200 Fly<br \/>\n(1:47.33 and 1:50.72, respectively).  The UVA sprinters stepped up again<br \/>\nagainst a strong UT sprint program as Kerpelman, Haag, and Greg Imboden<br \/>\nwent 1-3-5 in the 100.  Kerp went 45.31; Haag was 45.70; and Imboden was<br \/>\n46.57.  Wagner and Bo Greenwood were 1-2 in the 200 Back (1:46.49 and<br \/>\n1:50.77, respectively).  <\/p>\n<p>Virginia slammed the door on the meet with a 1-2-3-4 sweep of the 500 Free.  Crippen was 4:23.40; Prichard went 4:29.35; John Millen was 4:31.15; and Stefan Hirniak was 4:32.25.  <\/p>\n<p>The divers (Pete Amstutz, Andrew Barber, and Eric Kelley) had their 2nd 2-3-5 finish in diving against a strong UT diving corps.  The top UT diver broke both pool records on the boards today.  <\/p>\n<p>Vanja Rogulj took the 200 Breast with a time of 1:59.75.  The Cavs ended on a strong note as Haag, Wagner, McCoy, and Kerpelman won the 400 Free Relay in a time of 3:00.85.<\/p>\n<p>Virginia improved to 5-1 this year, with the only loss coming to the<br \/>\ndefending NCAA Champions Auburn to start the year.
