There was little separating them again at night.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ben Armbruster<\/strong> led the way with a time of 22.75 seconds, a meet record. He pushed ahead of <strong>Van Mathias\u2019<\/strong> 22.84 for the United States, with Brazil&#8217;s <strong>Gui Caribe<\/strong> third in 22.88. All three were under the meet mark that Ambruster set in prelims at 22.92 at Irvine&#8217;s Woollett Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth place went to <strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> of the U.S. in 22.99, with <strong>Isaac Cooper<\/strong> of Australia fifth in 23.02.<\/p>\n<p>None of the times pushed the U.S. Open record set 15 days ago by <strong>Ilya Kharun<\/strong> in this same pool at 22.59 seconds.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peacocktv.com\/sports\/pan-pacific-champs-prelims-day-1\/f97aa5f5-f95f-3bb7-a049-a89eb0507ce0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch on Peacock\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2026\/2026-pan-pacific-champs-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2026-pan-pacific-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swimming World Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The win sweeps up a stellar month for Armbruster, who tied countryman <strong>Kyle Chalmers<\/strong> for gold in 22.73 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/commonwealth-games-day-6-finals-kyle-chalmers-ben-armbruster-tie-for-50-fly-gold-with-another-australian-sweep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow<\/a>. That is the Australian and Oceania record (level with <strong>Matt Targett\u2019s<\/strong> swim from 2009).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I really was just trying to repeat what I did at Commies,&#8221; Armbruster said. &#8220;I had a good start and I finished really well. That is the first time I have done something like this (had a quick turnaround with big meets) and I wasn&#8217;t sure how my body was going to hold up. It is new territory, but I feel like I did really well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Pan Pacs contingent is desperately trying to keep pace with the best of Europe in this event. <strong>Egor Kornev<\/strong> blasted a 22.36 in semifinals for Russia. <strong>Maxime Grousset<\/strong> has a 22.49 from prelims. <strong>Noe Ponti\u2019s<\/strong> season-best is 22.53. All of those are faster than Kharun&#8217;s record. (Kharun\u2019s switch of nationalities from Canada to the United States wasn\u2019t finalized early enough last year for him to be selected to this meet.)<\/p>\n<p>Chalmers and Armbruster are tied for 10th in the world since the beginning of 2026.
