With only two finalists for each county allowed in locked finals and up to five participants per country in the meet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pan-pacs-format-will-have-u-s-swimmers-on-alert-during-morning-prelims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the battle between Americans &#8211; and to a lesser degree, Aussies &#8211; was going to be pitched<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That meant four Americans in the top seven of the men\u2019s 50 fly, for instance, and only two to the A final.<\/p>\n<p>In that opening 50 fly at Irvine\u2019s Woollett Aquatic Center, <strong>Van Mathias, Gui Caribe<\/strong> and <strong>Ben Armbruster<\/strong> traded the meet record among three swimmers to break 23 seconds.<\/p>\n<p>All the action:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peacocktv.com\/sports\/pan-pacific-champs-prelims-day-1\/f97aa5f5-f95f-3bb7-a049-a89eb0507ce0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch on Peacock\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2026\/2026-pan-pacific-champs-live-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Meet Results<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/meet\/2026-pan-pacific-championships\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Swimming World Meet Page<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/pan-pacific-championships-day-one-heat-sheets-stacked-mens-200-freestyle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Day 1 Heat Sheets<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 50 butterfly<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Van Mathias<\/strong> set a meet record in heat 2 of four at 22.99. <strong>Gui Caribe<\/strong> of Brazil broke it in heat 3 at 22.96. <strong>Ben Armbruster<\/strong> went faster still at 22.92 to set the pace and get into finals. That\u2019s your top three.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Michael Andrew<\/strong> is the other American in the A final in 23.01. That leaves no room for <strong>Santo Condorelli<\/strong> (fifth overall at 23.18) and <strong>Dare Rose<\/strong> (seventh at 23.26).<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s <strong>Isaac Cooper, Shoon Mitsunaga<\/strong> of Japan, <strong>Calvyn Justus<\/strong> of South Africa and Canada\u2019s <strong>Finlay Knox<\/strong> round out the top eight. Americans went 1-2-3-5 on time. <strong>Gabriel Jett<\/strong> is the other A finalist in 1:45.05. <strong>Aaron Shackell<\/strong> (1:45.19) and <strong>Henry McFadden<\/strong> (1:45.61) are consigned to the B final. Leading the way was Canadian <strong>Blake Tierney,<\/strong> who went 53.13 to grab the top seed. American <strong>Will Modglin<\/strong> was second in 53.17, while the final heat of three provided all three of the top times, with <strong>Marcus Reyes Gentry<\/strong> of Mexico scaring his national record.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jack Aikins<\/strong> is the other American in the A final after going 53.90. <strong>Daniel Diehl<\/strong> drops to the B final with his 54.16 that won the first heat. Also in the A final are Japan\u2019s <strong>Hidekatsu Takehara<\/strong> and <strong>Kodai Nishiono, Raben Dommann<\/strong> of Canada and <strong>Jack Harvey<\/strong> of Bermuda, who lowered his down to 16 in the Pan Pacs format.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carson Foster<\/strong> won the first head of two in 1:54.72, with <strong>Harrison Turner<\/strong> of Australia second. <strong>Juner<\/strong> <strong>Chen<\/strong> of China was the only other one in the first heat to break two minutes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Luca Urlando<\/strong> eased to the win in the final heat, going 1:54.13. <strong>Thomas Heilman<\/strong> was third overall (but not in the A final) in 1:55.11.<\/p>\n<p>The A final is thus Urlando, Foster, Turner, Chen, <strong>Kris Mihaylov, Benjamin Loewen, Se-bom Lee<\/strong> and Winnington,<\/strong> the Aussie Olympian who went 7:50.11.
