THE No. 6 University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team completed the first day of its two-day short-course meter dual meet with No. 3 Stanford with an 87.5-76.5 advantage Friday evening (Jan. 9) at Canham Natatorium. Leading the way for the Maize and Blue were brothers Christian Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS), who combined for three of Michigan's five event titles.

Stanford took an early lead as the Cardinal jumped out to a 13-4 lead following the first event, the 200-meter freestyle relay. Stanford's 'A' squad earned the first-place finish as they combined for a time of 1:40.07. Michigan's foursome of Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), Josh Hack (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS), Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./
Webb School) and Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) came in second with a clocking of 1:41.52.

Michigan came back strong in the second race to take the lead at 20-16 as sophomore Peter Vanderkaay led the way with a first-place showing in the 1,500-meter freestyle, clocking in with a season-best and NCAA consideration time of 15:23.86. The time bettered his previous best of 15:27.50 at the U.S. Open (Dec. 5).

Vanderkaay was followed into the wall by teammates Brendan Neligan (Hempstead, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy HS) and Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/ Oakville Trafalger HS) who finished second and third, respectively. After a strong start, Neligan fell to fourth midway through the race but rallied with four laps left and used a strong kick to out-touch Hurd for second by just 0.03, 15:27.04 to 15:27.07. Both times clocked in under the NCAA 'B' standard of 15:30.25.

Michigan's lead was short lived though as the Cardinal jumped back to the top at 30-25 after a 1-3-4 finish in the 100-meter butterfly. Tarwater and Jayme Cramer battled through the entire 100 meters but the U-M sophomore finished second by 0.13 seconds at 53.40 to 53.53. Both times earned NCAA consideration status.

Stanford extended its advantage to 45-29 after the 100-meter backstroke as the Cardinal took the top two spots. DeJong was Michigan's top finisher with a third-place showing in an NCAA consideration clocking of 54.42.

The Wolverines cut the deficit to eight at 50.5-42.5 following Chris Vanderkaay's victory in the 100-meter butterfly. The senior/junior earned the second event title by a Vanderkaay when he posted a time of 1:03.70 in the 100m breaststroke. Chris Vanderkaay's time was just 0.03 seconds ahead of Stanford's Keenan Newman who finished in 1:03.73.

Following its second straight victory, Michigan pulled ahead 56.5-54.5 as senior Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Marple Newtown) claimed victory in the 10-meter platform with a score of 386.30. U-M also earned the third and fourth spot in the event with Jonathan Donadee (Canfield, Ohio/ Canfield HS) and Pat Noyes (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier HS) posting scores of 215.65 and 189.15, respectively.

Peter Vanderkaay made it three straight overall and the second straight by the brothers in the pool as he earned an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:12.29 to win the 400-meter individual medley. Vanderkaay bettered the nation's No. 1 ranked Markus Rogan as the Cardinal performer also clocked in with an automatic time at 4:12.62. With the win, U-M extended its lead to 68.5-61.5.

Rogan controlled the race until the breaststroke portion when Vanderkaay began to reel him in. As he touched to head into the freestyle, Rogan had a half-body length on the Michigan freestyler, but Vanderkaay claimed a marginal 0.10 lead with just 50 meters to go. As the two battled down the stretch, Vanderkaay pulled away to win by 0.33 seconds.

U-M pushed the lead to 16 at 81.5-65.5 following its first place finish in the 800-meter freestyle relay. Michigan's foursome of Hurd, Tarwater, DeJong and Ketchum combined for an NCAA consideration time of 7:16.26.

Stanford pulled within 10, following the final race of the evening as the Cardinal clocked in with a first-place and NCAA consideration time of 1:29.83 in the 200-meter freestyle relay.

The two teams will return to the pool Saturday (Jan. 10) for the conclusion of their two-day dual meet.
