{"id":649963,"date":"2026-08-10T09:22:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T16:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=649963"},"modified":"2026-08-10T12:43:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T19:43:07","slug":"european-championships-three-crowns-to-be-decided-in-day-one-finals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-three-crowns-to-be-decided-in-day-one-finals\/","title":{"rendered":"European Championships, Day One Finals: Three Crowns to be Decided, Leon Marchand Makes European Debut"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.omegatiming.com\/2026\/european-aquatics-swimming-championships--live-results\">Start Lists\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/eurovision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch the European Championships Live (And Free!)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-championships-marrit-steenbergen-stamps-100-free-cr-maxime-grousset-rattles-french-fly-mark\/\">Day 1 prelims report<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The men&#8217;s 400IM and the respective 4&#215;200 free titles will be decided on the first night of finals at the European Championships in Paris.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ilia Borodin<\/strong> was the fastest qualifier in the 400IM as the show went on despite the absence of French hero <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> who withdrew from the IM events because of injury.<\/p>\n<p>Marchand will though lead off the French 4&#215;200 free squad against the likes of Great Britain&#8217;s <strong>Matt Richards<\/strong>, Germany&#8217;s <strong>Lukas M\u00e4rtens<\/strong> and <strong>Carlos D&#8217;Ambrosio<\/strong> of Italy.<\/p>\n<p>The women&#8217;s 4&#215;200 free features the Neutral Athletes B team alongside Germany in the centre lanes.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;ll be four semifinals with <strong>Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> setting a 100 free championship record of 52.62 in prelims while home favourite <strong>Maxime Grousset<\/strong> was just 0.01 off the CR and his own French 50 fly record. Adam Ramsay-Peaty led the way in the 100 breaststroke with his fellow Briton <strong>Katie Shanahan<\/strong> heading the 200 back.<\/p>\n<h3>Men\u2019s 400m Individual Medley<\/h3>\n<p>Borodin led the way in the prelims ahead of Finn Hammer of Germany with four men on 4:13.<\/p>\n<p>Alberto Razzetti led through the butterfly, ahead of Borodin with <strong>Max Litchfield<\/strong> coming through for a narrow lead after the backstroke.<\/p>\n<p>Borodin led after the breaststroke followed by Razzetti and Litchfield with the positions remaining unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>Borodin came home in a championship record of 4:08.17, taking 1.42secs off the previous standard of 4:09.59 held by the great <strong>Laszlo Cseh<\/strong> of Hungary since Eindhoven 2008. Razzetti won silver in 4:10.40 and Litchfield bronze in 4:11.58.<\/p>\n<p>Litchfield said: &#8220;This morning was faster than Glasgow, so it&#8217;s really good. Let&#8217;s say a month ago I wasn&#8217;t really sure I was even going to swim Commies or here. A few things been going wrong physically, we&#8217;ve not been able to get 100% right yet, so at Edinburgh Scottish Nationals I was like 4:23, so really struggling. So it&#8217;s great to see the work we&#8217;ve done the last four weeks and stuff to turn it around. It&#8217;s great. And some good learnings moving forward as well about how I recover and rest. It was just 0.42 off their European record of 7:45.51 that has stood since the 2009 World Championships in Rome.<\/p>\n<p>A battle royale unfolded behind them with Hungary taking silver in 7:49.09 ahead of the Neutral Athletes who took third by 0.01 in 7:49.13 ahead of Germany.<\/p>\n<p>The British victory was in stark contrast to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow where the women were shy of their usual levels of performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultparagraph\">Colbert said: &#8220;I mean, for all of us, we were about five seconds quicker overall time than in Glasgow. For the past few years we&#8217;ve been saying a performance like that was coming, and we just all sort of needed to be on or near our best on the same day and in the same race. And so I think for us all to come together and really bring it today, at such an atmospheric European Championships&#8230;. Leon! Leon!\u201d rang out around the Olympic Aquatic Centre as the four-time Olympic champion got on the blocks followed by a huge roar as he dived in.<\/p>\n<p>It rose to a crescendo as he put the French team into the lead out in lane one in 1:43.76 ahead of the Neutral Athletes.<\/p>\n<p>However, Lithuania chased down <strong>Pierre Largeron<\/strong> on the second leg to go ahead at halfway. Olympic and world champions Great Britain were fifth at halfway following legs by <strong>Matt Richards<\/strong> and <strong>Jack McMillan<\/strong> but <strong>James Guy<\/strong> had steered them into the lead after 500m.<\/p>\n<p>The three-time Olympic relay champion split 1:44.07 to hand over to Duncan Scott, who went eyeball to eyeball with Cornelius Jahn of Germany in the adjacent lane with Roman Fuchs on the anchor leg for France out in lane one.<\/p>\n<p>Great Britain came home in 7:01.52 to add the European crown to their Olympic and world titles ahead of France (7:02.23) and Germany (7:02.28). When Grousset was introduced to the crowd at the Olympic Aquatic Centre, a deafening roar became a chorus of \u201cMaxime! Maxime!\u201d However, it was Egor Kornev who led the way in 22.36, a new championship record, ahead of Grousset who matched his 22.49 prelim time.<\/p>\n<p>Ponti was third through to the final with Diogo Ribeiro, Luca Armbruster, Thomas Ceccon, Kristof Milak and Grigori Pekarski joining the Swiss.<\/p>\n<h4>Women\u2019s 100m Freestyle<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Marrit Steenbergen<\/strong> lowered <strong>Sarah<\/strong> <strong>Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m\u2019s <\/strong>long-standing world record to 51.68 at the Sette Colli in Rome in June.<\/p>\n<p>Steenbergen served notice of her intent in prelims where she took down Sj\u00f6str\u00f6m\u2019s championship record in 52.62 while looking as if she had plenty of reserve as she rolled into the wall.<\/p>\n<p>She was 0.08 off her WR at the turn before coming home in 52.44 for a new CR with <strong>Sara Curtis<\/strong> the other woman to break 53secs in 52.93.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barbora Janickova<\/strong> of Czechia clinched the eighth and last spot for the final in 53.62.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Start Lists\u00a0 Watch the European Championships Live (And Free!)
