{"id":649800,"date":"2026-08-08T05:30:14","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=649800"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:35:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T12:35:24","slug":"european-aquatics-championships-germany-leads-way-in-open-water-as-florian-wellbrock-clinches-third-gold-with-team-relay-victory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/european-aquatics-championships-germany-leads-way-in-open-water-as-florian-wellbrock-clinches-third-gold-with-team-relay-victory\/","title":{"rendered":"European Aquatics Championships: Germany Leads Way in Open Water as Florian Wellbrock Clinches Third Gold with Team Relay Victory"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/europeanaquatics.org\/paris-2026\/schedule-and-results\/#\/athletic-result\/OWS\/ST\/W\/10KM--------------\/FNL-\/000100--\">Results\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/eurovision\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Watch the European Championships Live (And Free!)<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Florian Wellbrock<\/strong> clinched his third gold as Germany won the team relay on the final day of the open water competition in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Wellbrock took over on the final leg from Olympic silver medallist <strong>Oliver Klemet<\/strong> after <strong>Julia Ackermann<\/strong> and <strong>Isabel Gose<\/strong> had swum the first two 1500 laps in the River Seine.<\/p>\n<p>The quartet posted 1:03:39.2 for the title ahead of Italy for whom 5\/10k champion <strong>Ginevra Taddeucci<\/strong> went on the second leg and who came home in 1:03:41.3.<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Betlehem<\/strong> followed up his 3km knockout sprint title by anchoring Hungary to bronze in 1:03:42.4.<\/p>\n<p>Wellbrock may not have replicated his historic four-gold haul from last year\u2019s World Championships in Singapore but his title-winning performances in the 5k, 10k and mixed relay plus Gose\u2019s sprint crown ensured Germany finished top of the medal table with four golds and a bronze.<\/p>\n<p>Italy were second two golds, a silver and four bronzes followed by Hungary with one gold, five silvers and a bronze.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s crazy; I really didn&#8217;t expect this,&#8221; said Wellbrock after emerging from the River Seine. &#8220;I never would have dreamed of winning three titles here.
