It will be the first edition of Pan Pacs since 2018 and, along with the Commonwealth Games, European Championships and Asian Games, is among the high-profile competitions of 2026. Held in Irvine, California, the meet will serve as a halfway marker of sorts to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles

Olympic champions Summer McIntosh and Katie Ledecky will headline the women’s action and are expected to meet in the 400-meter freestyle, which will also include Australian Lani Pallister. Additionally, the focus will be on Gretchen Walsh in multiple events, especially the 100 butterfly, where she is the only woman in history to break the 55-second barrier and is now stalking a sub-54 performance.

Here are five initial storylines to follow in women’s action:

Meet Page

Results

Kate Douglass Chasing Sub-25 in 50 Butterfly

The versatility of Kate Douglass will force the American star to make multiple program decisions during the course of Pan Pacs. However, it is likely she’ll open the meet with the 50 butterfly, since it is the kickoff event and does not conflict with any of her other entries. If Douglass indeed races the 50 fly, she’ll have the chance to join an exclusive club.

Only Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom and the United States’ Gretchen Walsh have broken the 25-second barrier in the 50 fly, with Sjostrom holding the world record at 24.43 and Walsh owning the American mark at 24.51. Together, they have combined for 29 sub-25 performances, an illustration of their dominance in the one-lap event. Can Douglass become the third sub-25 performer in history?

Douglass currently sits as the No. 8 performer of all-time in the 50 fly, tied with Dutchwoman Ranomi Kromowidjojo and Denmark’s Jeanette Ottesen. All three women have been 25.24 in the event, Douglass producing her time earlier this year at the Fort Lauderdale Open. That swim was followed by a world record of 23.59 in the 50 freestyle (since broken by Walsh at 23.55) and a 51.93 in the 100 freestyle.

Given Douglass’ recent form, there is little doubt she is capable of delivering a 24-point effort in the 50 fly. It would be a sensational way to jumpstart her Pan Pacs program.

Aussie Relay Streak in Jeopardy

Heading into Pan Pacs, Australia has won every 400 freestyle relay title in major international competition since 2019. Well, there is a caveat to that statement. The Dolphins did not win the gold medal in the event at the 2024 World Championships, but that competition was lightly attended from a starpower standpoint, and Australia did not send a fully loaded squad to the meet in Doha.

Otherwise, Australia has emerged triumphant at the past two Olympic Games (2020/2024) and the World Championships in 2019, 2022, 2023 and 2025. But the 400 freestyle relay that Australia will send to the blocks in Southern California is not of the same caliber, for a variety of reasons. For one, Emma McKeon retired after the last Olympics. Meanwhile, Shayna Jack just hung up her goggles after the Commonwealth Games and Mollie O’Callaghan has withdrawn from Pan Pacs with a back injury.

Meg Harris and Alex Perkins will be reliable for Australia, but the United States will field a team as strong as any in its history. Even with American-record holder Anna Moesch not on the Pan Pacs roster, Team USA will be able to use some combination of Kate Douglass, Torri Huske, Gretchen Walsh, Simone Manuel and Rylee Erisman. All have been sub-53 during their careers.

If the United States performs to its potential, Australia will likely see its streak in the 400 freestyle relay come to an end.

Agostina Hein a Multi-Event Threat

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-524001" data-attachment-id="524001" data-permalink="https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/five-womens-storylines-to-follow-at-the-pan-pacific-championships-gretchen-walsh-chasing-sub-54/agostina-hein/" data-orig-file="https://vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/agostina-hein-2023-TYR-Pro-Ft.Lauderdale-2640-Edit.jpg" data-orig-size="1000,750" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"5.6","credit":"Peter H. Bick

The release of the entry lists for Pan Pacs confirmed the participation of Argentina’s Agostina Hein, a rising star in the sport. At last year’s World Junior Championships, the 18-year-old won gold in the 400 individual medley and took silver in the 800 freestyle. Hein is entered in four events, the 400 IM, 400 freestyle, 200 IM and 800 freestyle. Because the last two events are scheduled for the final day of the meet, Hein will likely focus on one.

Pan Pacs will provide a chance for the Argentine talent to showcase her development at the midway point to the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Hein holds a career best of 4:34.34 in the 400 medley, the mark that earned her the world junior crown. She has clocked personal bests this season in the 400 freestyle (4:02.99), the 200 IM (2:10.63) and the 800 freestyle (8:22.01), so Hein seems poised for a best effort in the 400 IM.

Will the South American land on any podiums during the four-day meet? That type of outing would be a huge achievement for the youngster.

Keep an Eye on Yu Yiting

China is sending a small squad to Pan Pacs, not a surprise since the Asian Games are scheduled for September in Tokyo and that competition will be of utmost importance. Leading the way for the Chinese Federation is Yu Yiting, the multi-event standout who set an Asian record in the 200 individual medley in June. At the National Championships, Yu cracked the 2:07 barrier, producing a time of 2:06.82.

Yu is listed on the psych sheets in six events and while she won’t contest each of her entries, she has a number of options to fuel her preparation for the Asian Games. Obviously, it would be entertaining to see Yu in the 200 IM, which would mean a clash with Canadian star and Olympic champion Summer McIntosh and Olympic silver medalist Kate Douglass. That final could also feature Alex Walsh, a 2020 Olympic medalist and three-time medalist in the event at the World Championships.

Other likely entries for Yu are the 100 butterfly, where she’s been 56-mid, and the 400 IM, where she possesses a career best of 4:35.44.

Gretchen Walsh’s Pursuit of Another Realm

When Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom popped a world record of 55.48 to win gold in the 100 butterfly at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, the performance was monumental. Sjostrom remains the No. 2 performer of all-time in the event, an indication of how her mark was ahead of its time. But the United States’ Gretchen Walsh has simply taken the event to another stratosphere, and has plans to visit another galaxy.

Earlier this year, at the Fort Lauderdale Open, Walsh took the world-record in the 100 fly down to 54.33. That was more than a quarter-second faster than her prior global standard, the 54.60 she recorded in the same pool a year earlier (the city has been good to the American). Walsh has gone sub-55 on five occasions and she now owns the 16-fastest times ever produced in the 100 fly.

But Walsh is looking for a bit more, a time others can only dream of producing. The 23-year-old is seeking to break the 54-second barrier. Walsh is already 1.15 seconds faster than anyone else and if her talent leads her into 53-second territory, the gap would be almost unbelievable. The 100 butterfly is scheduled for Day Three of Pan Pacs, and there is no doubt it will be surrounded by hype.

Five Women’s Storylines to Follow at the Pan Pacific Championships;
