What I thought a few months ago was the flu has turned out to be my body fighting glandular fever,\u2019\u2019 McKeown said. \u201cI was sick going into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/aussie-trials-night-4-finals-kaylee-mckeown-ventures-under-204-00-for-the-eighth-time-to-wrap-up-backstroke-treble\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trials<\/a> and I just have not got better and I am worried about pushing myself so hard that I end up with chronic fatigue. It was a hard decision to make but it was the right one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McKeown won all three backstroke events at the Australian Trials and was aiming to do the same on bigger stages this year.<\/p>\n<p>The coaching staff supported McKeown&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this point in time, Kaylee\u2019s health is the most important thing,&#8221; Swimming Australia head coach <strong>Rohan Taylo<\/strong>r said. \u201cWe all know how fierce and competitive she is \u2013 and she showed that by performing the way she did at Trials.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKaylee is a once in a generation athlete &#8211; she is what we call a racer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Because of McKeown&#8217;s absence, there will be a spark missing from the international meets ahead this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to miss her on team not just in the pool but out of the pool with her experience and leadership but I personally feel, respect and support her decision to prioritize health,&#8221; Taylor said. \u201cI know after Trials she significantly modified her training program to the point of no high-intensity work and she just didn\u2019t improve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t wait to see her well again and back in the water competing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Swimming Australia will now take a 59-strong team to compete at the Games from July 23-August 2 and 43 athletes to
