During Sunday&#8217;s prelims of the 50-meter freestyle, Niewold delivered a national record of 21.56. That time bettered the previous Netherlands record, set at 21.56 by Thom de Boer in 2021. Niewold entered the day with a personal best of 21.76 and will look to take the record even lower during the evening finals.<\/p>\n<p>Training at the University of Alabama, Niewold has enjoyed a strong showing at the Dutch Champs. Prior to his record outing in the 50 freestyle, the 24-year-old established a Dutch record in the 50 butterfly, going 22.69. He also won the 100 freestyle while recording a mark of 47.97, good for another career best. Niewold&#8217;s prelims time in the 50 freestyle ranks No. 5 in the world for 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Following the final of the 50 freestyle, Niewold will shift his focus to next month&#8217;s European Championships in Paris, where he is expected to contest the 50 free, 100 free and 50 fly.
