The order of finish ended up being fairly predictable: China’s Qin Haiyang winning gold ahead of Japanese veteran Ippei Watanabe and Dutchman Caspar Corbeau. All had been considered potential medal-winners prior to the competition. But no one broke 2:07 in that race, creating the possibility of a much different field in 2026 and beyond.

The final 2025 world rankings for the 200 breaststroke featured none of the men who won medals in Singapore. Instead, it’s three teenagers sitting atop the pile. Japan’s Shin Ohashi held the top spot for most of the year after he blasted a time of 2:06.91 at a high school competition in July. He had already broken the world junior record a month earlier, and that effort put him among the 10-fastest performers in history in the event, but he did not earn the opportunity to test his skills among the best in the world. That’s because Japan had already held its Worlds qualifying meet, where Watanabe and Yamato Fukasawa claimed the top-two spots in the 200 breast.

Ohashi finished out the year with another 2:06 at the Japan Open to cement his dominance of the standings, and he kicked off 2026 with another brilliant performance. In March, he swam a time of 2:06.59 to lower his world junior record and become the seventh-fastest performer in history. Ohashi currently sits two seconds ahead of anyone else in the world rankings for 2026.

But in the biggest race of his career thus far, the 200 breast final at last summer’s World Junior Championships, Ohashi had a rival awaiting in Great Britain’s Filip Nowacki. When the two faced off in Otopeni, Nowacki got the better of his Japanese competitor in both the 100 and 200-meter races; Nowacki’s 200 time of 2:07.32 broke the championship record while just missing the British record of 2:07.30 held by Ross Murdoch since 2014. Notably, the time was faster than Qin swam on the way to the senior-level world title.

Even with those results from 2025, plenty of veteran breaststrokers are expected to have their say at various regional competitions this year, which will build up to the World Championships next summer and eventually the Los Angeles Olympics. Qin remains an X-factor; after bombing out of the final at the Paris Games, he rebounded sufficiently to win gold in Singapore but with a time two seconds back of his world record (2:05.48). He will have to prove that he has the ability to return to his top speed.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-624324" data-attachment-id="624324" data-permalink="https://www.swimmingworldmagazine.com/news/ranking-the-top-mens-performances-of-2025-leon-marchand-shines-again-with-200-im-world-record/leon-marchand-109/" data-orig-file="https://vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/leon-marchand-World-Cup-10-25-2869-Edit.jpg" data-orig-size="1000,750" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"4.5","credit":"Peter H. Bick

Then there are the two most recent Olympic champions, neither of whom raced the 200 breast in 2025. Leon Marchand opted out of the event to focus on the individual medley races, but he would have been a huge favorite to win the world title. In Paris, he led from start to finish while putting up a time of 2:05.85, the second-quickest mark in history, even though he had already raced the 200 butterfly final earlier in the session.

Australia’s Zac Stubblety-Cook was the silver medalist in Paris, and he has put together an enormous résumé of 200 breaststroke accomplishments. Before the rise of Qin and Marchand, he was the undisputed king of the event, with gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics and 2022 World Championships, plus a world record of 2:05.95 in 2022 that made him the first man ever under 2:06. Stubblety-Cook missed the 2025 competition season due to injury, but he could have more big results in his future at age 27.

Corbeau, 24, has won medals in the 200 breast at each of the last three global long course competitions, and he put together a stunning short course swim at the World Cup meet in Toronto in October, becoming the first man ever under 2:00. That record-smashing performance indicated that he could have a big jump coming in long course as well.

Eight swimmers dipped under 2:08 last year, four of them Japanese as Fukasawa and Yu Hanaguruma joined Shin and Watanabe. Kirill Prigoda placed fourth in the Worlds final as he continued his strong comeback to international racing. The top American was AJ Pouch, who took fifth at Worlds after leading at the 150-meter mark. The 24-year-old put himself in position to contend for medals with a best time of 2:08.24 in the semifinal round, so he could continue his upward trajectory. The top U.S. swimmer for the previous three years, Matt Fallon, did not race in 2025 after clocking 2:06.54 at the 2024 Olympic Trials.

Moving forward, the trajectory of the event is unclear. It’s unlikely that a 2:07-mid will be sufficient to win another global title anytime soon. Marchand might still be the man to beat any time he races the 200 breast, but he will have big challenges from Ohashi, Nowacki and others in the next generation of breaststroke standouts.

Shin Ohashi, Filip Nowacki Aiming to Lead Speed Surge in Men’s 200 Breaststroke At last year’s World Championships, the men’s 200 breaststroke final produced one of the most exciting finishes

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3,17,10
53513,47484,135300,77336,63468,134778,66581
post-646282","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","category-commentary","category-world","tag-200-breaststroke","tag-caspar-corbeau","tag-filip-nowacki","tag-leon-marchand","tag-qin-haiyang","tag-shin-ohashi","tag-zac-stubblety-cook

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v24.3 (Yoast SEO v24.3) -
