DAPHNE, Alabama, December 28. SWIMMING superstar Michael Phelps was
\nnamed male Athlete of the Year by the United States Sports Academy on December 24. <\/p>\n

Phelps was honored as Swimmer of the Meet at the World Championships in Barcelona, after winning six medals, including four golds, and breaking five world records. In Barcelona, Phelps became first person ever to break five world records in one meet. <\/p>\n

He also won three U.S. national titles at the USA Swimming Summer Nationals, becoming the first man in history to win events in three different disciplines — freestyle, backstroke and individual medley — at one national championship.<\/p>\n

Second place for the men went to Barry Bonds, who hit .341 with 45 home
\nruns and 90 RBI. The San Francisco Giants outfielder became the only player to win three consecutive MVP awards, winning his sixth overall. American tennis star Andy Roddick placed third. Roddick officially became the second-youngest man to finish a season at No. 1 when the final ATP Tour
\ncomputer rankings of 2003 were released.<\/p>\n

The USSA's overall selection for the 2003 Athlete of the Year was Lance Armstrong. The women's winner was golfer Annika Sorenstam.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
