the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, Williamson lit the final candles of his comeback cake to qualify for his second Commonwealth Games team for Glasgow and this year\u2019s Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine &#8211; steps towards LA28.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Sam delivered a mighty heat swim of 59.11 in the morning, before doubling down to deliver in spades in the final with his 59.07 winning time to claim the Australian tirle \u2013 the fastest he\u2019s swum in two years, since the 2024 Olympic Trials \u2013 and placing him inside the top eight in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The pinnacle of 13 months of blood, sweat and tears \u2013 a celebration of human spirit and grit determination \u2013 and of support from Team Williamson.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Sam climbed out of the pool and immediately hugged his life long coach from the Melbourne Vicentre, <b>Craig Jackson<\/b> on pool deck, as emotional images of his family in the grandstand were beamed around Australia on prime time television, showing just how emotional this journey has been.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Sam blowing a kiss to his Mum and Dad and girlfriend as they celebrated this mighty comeback.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Then the poolside interview on <em>Channel 9&#8217;s Wide World Of Sport<\/em> awaited with recently retired Olympic golden girl-turned television host and friend <b>Ariarne Titmus<\/b> (who has taken to her post swimming TV career like a duck to water).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Both Williamson and Arnie holding back the tears before Sam drew breath saying: \u201cGod it feels \u00a0good to be back!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThe last 13 months is something I hope I never have to go through again\u2026..I was laying in a hospital bed\u2026unsure whether I was ever going to be able to swim again.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI watched Trials from the couch on crutches, I couldn\u2019t walk.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Sam later declaring it had been his team in Melbourne, who got him through his darkest days\u2026saying: \u201cMy friends, my family, support crew from the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS). Photo Courtesy Delly Carr (Swimming Australia)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cI could count on them, I could depend on them, and I couldn&#8217;t have done it without them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThey have been instrumental in this comeback and I can&#8217;t wait to share a beer with every single one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Back on pool deck, Titmus added her personal touch, saying: \u201cAs your friend Sam I know you\u2019ve been so positive through this whole experience and you told me before the race tonight the one thing you had to do is believe\u2026and Sam you certainly did believe.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Williamson answering with: \u201cIt was my team who believed every step of the way..they\u2019ve been my rock and the Commonwealth Games holds a special place in my heart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cIt was my first senior team four years ago. and to get the opportunity to get the green and gold on again and represent Australia is a dream come true\u2026.I can\u2019t wait for Glasgow\u2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve still got the 50m to go (here), so the job&#8217;s not quite done yet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve got five weeks to refine, to find a little bit more speed\u00a0because while the 59s are pretty good domestically, a lot of guys around the world are going 58s.
