Lenny Krayzelburg, Aaron Piersol, Ryan Lochte, and Ryan Murphy are just a few of the men who have dominated this event at Pan Pacs. Will the streak continue? Although he has returned to training with his sites set on a home Olympic Games in 2028, Murphy will not compete at Pan Pacs later this summer. And over the past few years, the U.S. arsenal in the 200 backstroke has been thinner than usual.

Here’s a look at how the event is shaping up at Pan Pacs.

U.S. Contenders

The U.S. men will have a chance to keep this streak alive with the likes of Keaton Jones and Jack Aikins. On paper, Aikins is the United States’ best chance for gold. While he owns a career best of 1:54.25 from last year’s World Championships Trials, Aikins has only contested one long-course meet this year, which was the Fort Lauderdale Open. He finished fourth in the 200 back with a time of 2:02.13, not an ideal swim.

Aikins had a successful yards season with a new best time in the event, a 1:37.90 from the NCAA Championships. Aikins has always been known more for his long-course abilities than short course. After big improvements in short course, the hope is he gets even faster in the big pool. His best time is very strong, one that, if repeated, could easily land him on the top step of the podium. After a poor World Championships performance due to illness, Aikins should be nothing but motivated to put up top times again.

Meanwhile, Jones finds himself as another strong contender in the 200 back this summer. With a career best of 1:54.61 from the 2024 Olympic Trials, the Cal standout currently sits 20th in the world with his time from the Sacramento stop of the TYR Pro Series. Jones’ ranking is deceiving, considering his time is from a midseason meet, and not from a major competition like most of the other swimmers. Like Aikins, Jones had a disappointing 2025 World Championships, where he was eliminated in the semifinals. If Jones can find his best, he’ll be a contender for gold.

Key Threats

More than ever, the U.S. men have been pressed in the 200 backstroke, and there is more than one person who can stop the Pan Pacs streak from continuing. Canada’s Blake Tierney finished fourth at the World Championships in Singapore with a time of 1:55.09, only .06 off his Canadian record from the semifinals. Tierney holds a season best of 1:58.21 from the U.S. Open. With the way he drops time during taper, his in-season times mean almost nothing. Come August, Tierney will be a top threat. If he rests at all for Canadian Trials in July, then we will have a much better baseline for what to expect out of him at Pan Pacs.

Juho Lee of Korea has found himself in prime form over the past year. Late last year, he produced a time of 1:55.34. This time is also his personal best. The 31-year-old will be the veteran of the field and hopes that his experience can take over in a field as tight as this one.

As always at Pan Pacs, the Japanese pose a threat in any event, and the 200 back is no different. Hidekazu Takehara (1:55.50) and Kodai Nishiono (1:56.04) have solid personal bests. Both are very young and rapidly improving. Takehara is 22 years old, and Nishiono is 23. After getting a taste of the international stage at the World Championships last summer, Pan Pacs will be a great test for both of them. If they continue to improve, there is no doubt they can compete for gold. Additional depth is supplied by 17-year-old Yumeki Kojima, who recently posted a 1:55.62.

The Wildcard

Pan Pacs announced that non-European countries could participate in this year’s Pan Pacs. This means that one of the best backstrokers in the world, Pieter Coetze, could potentially compete in the meet. While his main focus is on the Commonwealth Games, an appearance by Coetze would add a spark. The World Champs silver medalist would be the favorite in this race if he competes. With a best time of 1:53.36, Coetze would find himself seeded almost a second ahead of the competition.

Another wildcard of the 200 back has nothing to do with the swimmers competing, but rather the conditions of the meet. Pan Pacs will take place in Irvine, California, meaning the meet will take place outside at the William Woollett Aquatic Center. Swimming backstroke outside is known to be a tough task.

No matter what international competition the U.S. competes in, it will always have a good chance at backstroke gold. At the 2026 Pan Pacs, the Americans will have a solid chance to keep a historic streak alive.

Can the U.S. Men Keep Their Historic 200 Backstroke Streak at Pan Pacs Alive?
