The 26-year-old Hungarian returned to the water at the Hungarian Nationals in April, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/kristof-milak-soars-to-50-22-100-fly-scorcher-amid-golden-double-at-hungarian-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he turned in the fastest time in the world this year in the 100 butterfly at 50.22<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milak continued his impressive performances during the first two stops of the Mare Nostrum Tour in Monaco and Canet. Milak won the 100 fly at both stops, in times of 50.66 and 50.73, respectively just a few tenths shy of his world-leading mark from April. Not only is seeing Milak back in the pool exciting for swim fans, but his return could lead to some of the races of the summer, depending on what Milak decides to swim at the 2026 European Championships in August.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>100 Fly Showdown<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 100 fly between <\/span><strong>No\u00e8 Ponti<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <strong>Maxime Grousset<\/strong> and Milak could be the race of the summer when all is said and done. It could also turn out to be the fastest 100 fly podium in history if all three swim up to their potential. With all three swimmers&#8217; best times under the 50-second barrier, this could be the first time a 100 fly podium has had all three medalists under 50 seconds. Last year&#8217;s World Championships in Singapore came close with third-place finisher <strong>Ilya Kharun<\/strong> touching in 50.07.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What makes the race so interesting is not just how close the race should be, but also how the races are swum. Grousset, the 27-year-old Frenchman, has the most speed of the three, going out in 22.80 on the way to his best time but coming back the slowest in 26.82.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ponti finds himself in the middle, but slightly closer to Grousset\u2019s strategy. It is no surprise that the short course world-record holder in the 50 butterfly likes to take the race out fast. Milak is the back-half specialist in this race. His best time from the 2020 Olympic Games saw him come home in a 26.03, close to a second faster than Grousset and Ponti.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a race of two different strategies, one that should make for an exciting finish. If Milak wants any shot at winning this race, he needs to stay within striking distance on the first 50. Currently, the three are ranked first, second and fourth-fastest among European swimmers this year. Milak leads the way at 50.22, with Grousset second at 50.95 and Ponti fourth at 51.11. This race should be circled by all swim fans come August, and it should not disappoint.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>200 Fly: Milak vs. Marchand?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If anything could top the 100 fly, this race could do it, but will the race even happen? The duel between Milak and <strong>Leon Marchand<\/strong> during the 2024 Olympics will never be forgotten, with the 24-year-old Frenchman having a historic last 50 comeback against the defending Olympic champion. With Milak\u2019s long break as well as his recent results, this seems like an unlikely rematch.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milak swam the 200 fly prelims at the Hungarian Nationals, touching in a time of 1:59.88, ultimately scratching his finals swim. With those circumstances, Milak is not qualified to swim the race at the European Championships and would need to qualify at another meet this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many questions remain from what has been seen so far when it comes to Milak\u2019s 200 fly. How much has he been training? Is he mentally ready to race Marchand after a heartbreaking Olympics outcome? With his last 50 in his recent 100 fly performances, it would suggest that training has been solid, but all these questions will be answered whether he swims the race or not. All anyone should hope for is that Milak swims the 200 fly and gives swim fans another instant classic between himself and Marchand.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Freestyle Events<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than the 100 fly, Milak has qualified for the European Championships in the 50 fly as well as the 50 and 100 freestyle. Now, while these races may not be as exciting as others for Milak, he could still compete for spots in finals and possibly even medals. In previous appearances at the <a href=\"https:\/\/europeanaquatics.org\/paris-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Championships<\/a>, Milak has captured 10 medals, eight gold and two silver, and he could add to that total later this summer.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Could Return of Kristof Milak Spark the Races of the Summer?
